Apple has announced a major upgrade to its parental control tools, bringing new features to iPhone, iPad, and Mac users later this year. The update aims to help families manage children’s digital experiences more effectively while offering greater flexibility and control.
The changes arrive as part of Apple’s 2026 software releases and build on the company’s long-standing Screen Time system. However, the latest update goes beyond simple app limits and introduces a more comprehensive approach to online safety and device management.
Easier Setup for Child Accounts
One of the most significant improvements focuses on child accounts. Apple plans to simplify the process of creating and managing accounts for younger users. Under the new system, children under 13 will require dedicated child accounts, while families can also use similar protections for older teenagers.
Parents will gain clearer options for controlling access to apps, media, and online content. Additionally, they can gradually expand permissions as children grow and demonstrate responsible device use.
New Website Approval and Communication Tools
Apple is also expanding its approval system beyond apps. A new feature called Ask to Browse allows children to request access to websites, while parents can review and approve those requests before granting permission. The feature will work through Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.
Meanwhile, communication safety tools are receiving upgrades as well. In addition to existing protections against explicit images, children will receive warnings when messages contain graphic or violent content. As a result, families will have stronger safeguards against a wider range of potentially harmful material.
More Flexible Screen Time Management
Apple’s updated Time Allowances system gives parents greater control over when and how devices can be used. For example, families can set different rules for school days, weekends, and specific hours throughout the day.
