Apple could soon reintroduce one of the Apple Watch’s most distinctive materials. According to a recent report, the company is considering bringing back ceramic case models after removing them from the lineup in 2020. While the overall Apple Watch design is expected to stay the same, the return of ceramic could give buyers another premium option.
The report suggests Apple may launch the ceramic version by late 2026 or sometime in 2027. If accurate, it would mark the material’s first appearance in nearly seven years.

A Premium Material With a Rich History
Ceramic first appeared with the Apple Watch Edition Series 2. Apple later expanded the lineup by adding a gray ceramic option to the Series 3. However, the Edition model disappeared with Series 4 before ceramic returned briefly for Series 5. After that, Apple removed the material again with Series 6, and it has not returned since.
Although ceramic models were available for only a few years, they gained a loyal following. Many buyers appreciated their smooth finish, premium appearance, and unique place within the Apple Watch family.
Premium Pricing Is Likely
Apple has not revealed pricing for a possible ceramic Apple Watch. Still, previous models show that the material comes at a significant premium. When the standard Apple Watch Series 5 started at $399, the ceramic Edition cost $1,299 for the 40mm version and $1,349 for the 44mm model. Those prices were also higher than stainless steel, titanium, and even some luxury editions.
As a result, any future ceramic model would likely target buyers seeking a luxury smartwatch rather than an entry-level device.
What the Rumor Means for Apple Fans
The report represents the first major rumor linking ceramic to Apple’s 2026 smartwatch plans. Interestingly, the original ceramic Apple Watch was also rumored well before its official launch, suggesting Apple has explored the material for years before releasing it.
For now, Apple has not confirmed the report. Nevertheless, the possibility of ceramic returning has already generated excitement among longtime Apple Watch fans. If the material does return, it could add fresh appeal to the premium smartwatch lineup while celebrating one of Apple’s most distinctive designs.
