Apple’s new foldable iPhone Duo takes a different approach to authentication. Instead of Face ID, the device relies on Touch ID and can also use an Apple Watch for convenient unlocking.
The change reflects a design challenge created by Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Users can operate the Duo while it is either open or closed. According to the report, Apple could not make Face ID work effectively in both positions.
Touch ID Fits the Foldable Design
Touch ID gives the iPhone Duo greater flexibility because orientation does not limit fingerprint authentication. Users can unlock the phone whether it faces forward or backward, and whether it is folded or unfolded.
However, some iPhone owners may miss Face ID. Facial recognition normally requires little effort because users can authenticate simply by looking at their device.
Therefore, Apple Watch could provide a useful alternative for those who prefer a more automatic experience.
Apple Watch Offers Another Unlock Option
Apple has not yet explained every detail of the feature. However, the report indicates that an unlocked Apple Watch worn by the user can authenticate and unlock the iPhone Duo.
The system will presumably consider proximity and other security factors. For example, someone should not be able to take the iPhone and continue unlocking it after moving away from its owner.
Touch ID may remain more practical for approving purchases or opening protected apps. Still, Apple Watch could potentially support some of these actions. On a Mac, Apple Watch authentication can already request confirmation through a double-press of the watch’s side button.
Convenience Comes With Security Considerations
The report notes that built-in biometric authentication remains the more secure and dependable choice. Nevertheless, Apple Watch unlocking could make daily use faster for customers who prefer Face ID-style convenience.
