Apple’s iPhone Duo offers two displays and expanded multitasking, but its dual-screen design comes with an important limitation. Users cannot play two separate videos at the same time, even when each video appears on a different display.
The restriction may surprise buyers who expect the foldable device to treat its screens independently. However, the reason appears to lie in how iOS manages media playback rather than the Duo’s hardware.
Dual Displays Do Not Mean Dual Video
Apple’s existing devices already limit simultaneous media playback. For example, music may stop when another app starts providing audio. A similar rule applies when users watch videos on an iPhone or iPad.
The iPhone Duo follows that same approach. In theory, its two displays could show separate videos, while two pairs of AirPods could handle the audio. However, iOS does not currently allow that setup.
Still, Apple does use both screens together for certain functions. According to the document, FaceTime can take advantage of the multiple displays. Video playback, though, remains limited to one active stream.
Multitasking Still Gets an Upgrade
The limitation does not remove the Duo’s broader multitasking benefits. Apple has introduced a new view that lets users pin a video near the top of the screen. Meanwhile, another app can remain active below it.
For instance, a user could keep an Apple TV video playing while browsing another app. However, if that second app begins playing its own video, iOS pauses the first stream automatically.
Therefore, the feature supports video-plus-app multitasking rather than two independent video streams.
iOS Still Defines the Duo Experience
The restriction highlights an important point about Apple’s first foldable phone. Despite its unusual hardware, the iPhone Duo still runs iOS. As a result, some familiar iPhone limitations remain in place.
Apple could potentially change media behavior through future software updates, but the document provides no indication that it plans to do so.
For now, buyers can expect more screen space and stronger multitasking, but not simultaneous dual-video playback. The iPhone Duo opens for pre-orders on October 16 and begins shipping on October 23.
