Apple’s Mac mini has inspired an unusual new gaming device. Chris Cheng of Shring Solutions has transformed the compact desktop computer into a battery-powered handheld with its own screen and controls.
Cheng demonstrated his creation in a YouTube video, revealing a custom-built cyberdeck based on the M4 Mac mini. The project combines portable computing with features normally associated with handheld gaming consoles.
Moreover, its modular design allows users to remove the computer without modifying its internal components.
Mac mini Gains Touchscreen and Gaming Controls
The device features a 7-inch touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, Cheng incorporated a backlit keyboard and trackpad into its compact vertical chassis.
Nintendo Switch Joy-Con rails sit along both sides of the enclosure. Consequently, users can attach compatible controllers for gaming, mouse navigation and custom shortcuts.
The integrated battery system reportedly provides approximately six hours of continuous video playback.
However, portability comes with some compromises. The device measures 17.6cm tall, 17.2cm wide and 5.7cm thick. Its considerable depth could make extended handheld gaming uncomfortable.
Modular Design Supports Future Upgrades
Rather than dismantling Apple’s computer, Cheng created a custom 3D-printed enclosure around its original hardware.
The Mac mini slides into the chassis like a removable game cartridge. Therefore, users could potentially replace the computer without rebuilding the entire handheld.
Furthermore, Cheng designed the enclosure to accommodate other hardware with matching dimensions.
He suggested that future versions could support alternative computers, including the Raspberry Pi 5.
The newer M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini models also appear to retain compatible exterior dimensions. However, their higher prices could discourage experimental modifications.
Custom Build Presents Technical Challenges
Despite its polished appearance, the project required considerable engineering work.
Cheng encountered several electrical problems while developing the enclosure and integrating its components. Nevertheless, he documented the design and assembly process in his video.
The project also remains a custom creation rather than a commercial product. Cheng has not announced a ready-made conversion kit.
Ultimately, the handheld demonstrates how creative hardware design can extend the Mac mini’s capabilities beyond traditional desktop computing. It also offers an unusual example of combining Apple’s compact computer with portable gaming hardware.
