Virgin Install: NetNewsWire

NetNewsWireNetNewsWire is the one application that I spend the most amount of time using on my Mac, and it is one of the first applications that I install when I am setting up a new Mac. I can't imagine using anything else to manage my 550+ subscriptions, and don't get me started on web based alternatives.

There are those who don't like to shell out money for their software (though it is a steal at $24.95) and Ranchero feels your pain. NetNewsWite Lite is free and offers all the basic functionality that you could want.

Paul Wren: I totally understand where you're coming from -- I've been in the same position: PowerBook at home and PC at work. But, I've got good news. (No, it's not a Geico commercial.) You can use NNW to read your Bloglines subscriptions! Works great.

Sorry if this gets you started, but I can't imagine ever using a desktop newsreader application again, at least as long as I am forced to live with more than one computer. I use Bloglines from my Powerbook and from my Wintel box at work, subscribe to over 100 feeds, and never have to see the same entry twice. I noticed that almost 1400 people subscribe to TUAW from Bloglines.

What is everyone gripe about Bloglines? I'm a big fan of their service and it can be accessed from any computer in the world.

I also prefer Shrook (http://www.fondantfancies.com/apps/shrook/). It will update feeds more often without having to do it manually. You should give it a try and compare it to NNW.

I prefer Shrook. I like the 3-pane side by side layout and the synchronization with shrook.com.
