Poll: Do you mod OS X's appearance?
One of my regular online haunts is Resexcellence. They've got a huge library of appearance themes for Mac OS X. While I enjoy looking at them, I've never installed any. I imagine that it's fun and satisfying to use a theme you've designed yourself, or simply one that agrees with your own aesthetic sense, but I just like Aqua. I agree that some of the inconsistencies are annoying, but I'm willing to (begrudgingly) live with them.So what's your take? Do you mod OS X's appearance? Have a favorite theme?

In response to #11 Is it that bad in Windows-land that you need Mac skins to look cool? When you are originally a Mac user but has been forced to use Windows for work and other programs that just don't run on Macs and you can't afford the upgrade or waiing until you can afford a Mac to switch... Modding the heck out of Windows to look like a Mac is the next best thing. Yes I guess things are that bad for some of us.

I just don't like system hacks very much anymore, and besides, I don't like any of the skins that I've seen.

My favorite little tidbit is that it replaces the OS X progress circle with a droplet of milk splashing. It's really great. Much easier to read than OS X's "I can't decide whether I'm aqua or metal" interface. Also, the all white interface means I can invert the screen to nearly entirely black. It's a lot easier on the eyes whilst working at night.

September 01 2005 at 10:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've changed quite a few of my icons. Not extreme changes, I prefer the Finder icon from Jaguar to the Panther/Tiger icon I find much less appealing, likewise I use the older version of iPhoto to the new camera on 5, and I've taken the Tiger iChat icon for my personal macs which I'm keeping on Panther. At work were I've been required to upgrade to Tiger, I've been modifying it to act as much like Panther as possible, replacing the icons hacking the Mail interface builder files to use the old toolbar style, replacing the horrible icons and I'm working on an Aqua "Save..." button to replace the incorrect and Graphite button that has an incorrect down arrow. I'd love to find out how to mod Tiger to behave even more like Panther.
