MacBook is here, and it's black

Ah, ThinkSecret. You told us we'd get a MacBook on a Tuesday, but not which Tuesday. Regardless, the MacBook has landed, and it's pretty cool.
The MacBook Pro's younger sibling features a Core Duo Intel processor at either 1.83GHz or 2.0GHz, FrontRow (and remote), a built-in iSight, a 13.3 inch "glossy" display that Apple says is "...79% brighter with 30% more viewing area" than the now defunct iBook. The Magsafe power adapter is also included, as well as a latch-less, magnetic closing mechanism. As for graphics, you'll find an Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory. Finally, Airport Extreme is built in as well.
There are three pricing options: The 1.83GHz (combo drive) and 2.0GHz (Super Drive) models are available in white for $1099US and $1299 for starters. If you want black, you're going to need to come up with $1499US. For the extra two hundred bucks you get black paint and a larger hard drive (80GB @ 5400 rpm vs. 60GB at the same speed). But really, who is going to buy a white one?

Can be worthwhile to buy in the US. Just got my partner a little white MacBook in NY. $1099 + 8.35% sales tax = 1190.77 = £631.77. I think that if you buy in certain states, Oregon for example, there is no sales tax to pay at all, so if you're out there for another reason it could make sense. Mind you, you've still got to smuggle it back into the UK, otherwise you'll get clobbered for duty and VAT. If you don't want to break the law then it doesn't make sense.

Maybe I ought to start the petition now!"
get a portective case or the apple ice, you ÃDÃÃT
No, the MacBook is not a replacement for the 12" PowerBook, but it is an outstanding replacement for the 12" iBook AND the 14" iBook. As for the black tax, well, were I buying a MacBook, I'd probably end up paying it, because it looks so good.
Sadly, the weight, rather than the color is keeping me from buying. I mean, it only weighs half a pound less than my 15" PowerBook, and weighs almost a pound more than my 12" PowerBook. Just as I chose the (much) more expensive 12" PowerBook over the iBook on account of its weight, that means that my 12" PowerBook will have to remain my travel machine for the foreseeable future.
While Apple did not provide a suitable Intel-powered replacement for the 12" PowerBook, they did a wonderful job on the MacBook Pro. I'd love a 15" or 17" MacBook Pro on the desk in place of my 15" PowerBook, but since that is a work machine that will never play games (the reason I want an Intel travel laptop), I won't bother. I play games in hotel rooms on lonely business trips, not when at home or at work.
Yeah the black one looks very cool but I wonder if I would have overheat problems...

May 20 2006 at 7:36 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyalthough the black MacBook does LOOK very cool compared to the white MacBook, if it is exposed to the sun at all it won't RUN cool - that black plastic will absorb heat like a sponge absorbs water - and heat DEGRADES electrical components, especially in an already cooling-deficient design like a laptop where everything is crammed in so close without much space for cooling air to circulate... and of course charging $150 more for black plastic verges on criminal and is a huge marketing BLUNDER for Jobs/Apple as it exposes their utter GREED... should we expect a black iPod to soon cost $50 more than an identical white iPod?
as far as the moron in #4 post who said "its [sic] a larger hard disk you idiot" - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know who the real idiot is...
"At least everyone agrees that black paint is not worth $150."
$150 is too much for me to pay for a durable black polycarbonate shell. ? ? ?
Now that is crazy.
Maxed out it cost no more than my first Black Apple, Macintosh TV. The Macintosh TV still works fine, okay so the crt has seen better days... My old wooden Apple didn't come cheap either. How about floppy drives? I think my first one of those was about $1,000.00 as was my first digital watch.
What is my point? You vote with your dollar. We voted for technology and we got it. We wine and cry for cheap technology and we got made in China, Philippino technical support at Dell and an Indian/Pakistani engineering team at AMD in Austin Texas. I am certain of one thing you do vote with your Dollar. And your dollar has a very loud and resounding voice.
Vote wisely with due consideration for the consequences of your actions $ $...
I do not understand why people hide the apple logo on tv shows and commercials these days? that makes me so mad its like why are you using an apple if you dont want people to know?
Apple really needs to work on the stuff they make the macbooks out of. My old ibook has gotten really scratched and i have always tried to take god care of it. It takes nothing to scratch these things and even my powerbook can get dinged pretty easy. They need to figure out something to make them much more durrable. my black ipod nano i have had for less then 6 months and it looks like i have had for years its all scratched and just looks horrible but i think apple should have tested these things before realsing them to the public and making them much more resitant to these types of things.
yes that keyboard is relaly odd looking i dont like it at all
It sucks that apple is making you pay an extra 200 bucks just to get a black paint joab and an extra 20 gigs of hd space. I dig mac, but this sort of thing is discouraging.
May 17 2006 at 11:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI visited a Mac store today and inspected the new MacBook first hand. I posted a rather lengthy (allright, too lengthy) review on my new blog if you're interested (http://wixtech.blogspot.com/). In summary, I went there expecting to buy a new MacBook and I left deciding I should wait and see how these work out.
