Apple has unveiled the MacBook Neo, its most affordable Mac laptop yet. The new device starts at $599 and aims to attract students and first-time Mac buyers. Despite the lower price, Apple says the laptop still reflects the premium design standards associated with the MacBook line.

The company launched the MacBook Neo on March 4. Apple executives describe it as an effort to expand the Mac ecosystem to people who usually purchase low-cost Windows laptops or Chromebooks. At the same time, Apple insists the device remains unmistakably a Mac.

Premium Design Without Cheap Materials

Apple’s industrial design team focused heavily on maintaining the MacBook identity. According to Apple’s vice president of industrial design, Molly Anderson, the team wanted the laptop to look and feel like a true MacBook despite its lower price.

Unlike many budget laptops, the MacBook Neo still uses an aluminum enclosure. Apple avoided plastic or composite materials that typically appear in cheaper devices. The goal was to keep the product’s build quality consistent with the rest of the Mac lineup.

Designers also worked to preserve what Apple calls the “essence of a Mac.” This includes the sturdy aluminum body and refined appearance that customers expect from Apple laptops.

Manufacturing Changes Lower the Cost

Instead of cutting corners on materials, Apple changed the manufacturing process. Engineers redesigned how the aluminum body is produced. They now start with an aluminum extrusion, then flatten and shape it with heat and pressure.

This approach reduces the amount of machining needed to form the laptop’s enclosure. Since machining aluminum is one of the most expensive parts of laptop production, the new method significantly lowers costs.

The revised process also uses less aluminum overall. As a result, Apple reduces both production expenses and material waste.

Hardware Trade-Offs and Target Users

To reach the $599 price point, Apple made several hardware compromises. The MacBook Neo runs on the A18 Pro processor, a chip typically used in iPhones, rather than Apple’s M-series Mac processors.

The laptop includes 8GB of unified memory and two USB-C ports. However, it does not support Thunderbolt, and one port operates at USB 2 speeds.

Apple believes the performance still suits everyday tasks like browsing, schoolwork, and streaming. The device mainly targets students and people buying their first Mac.

A Colorful and Sustainable Mac

Apple designed the MacBook Neo to feel approachable and friendly. The laptop comes in silver, dark blue, pale pink, and citrus yellow, each with matching keyboards and accents.

Sustainability also played a role in the design. The device uses around 60% recycled materials, including roughly 90% recycled aluminum in the enclosure.

With the MacBook Neo, Apple enters the budget laptop market more aggressively. The company hopes the device will introduce a new generation of users to the Mac ecosystem while keeping Apple’s design philosophy intact.
