VisualHub - The universal video converter

VisualHub is a feature-packed and 'universal' video converter for Mac OS X from the maker of iSquint. From its website: "VisualHub bridges the gap between numerous complicated video formatting standards, and people that just want to get the job done - just what you would expect from the Mac." It boasts fast conversion from nearly every video format to iPod, PSP, DV, DVD, AVI, MP4, WMV, MPEG and Flash (what: no animated GIF?), and brags about ts three-step conversion process: click, drag, click.

Fortunately, VisualHub also offers advanced features like bitrate control, frame cropping and audio quality. Xgrid is supported for those with multiple Macs on a network and CPU cycles to spare, while QuickTime Pro and other plugins need not apply.

VisualHub's long list of features don't stop there, however, so check out Techspansion's product page for the full feature list and samples of its work. A demo is available, while a full license will cost you a mere $23.32 USD.

[thanks Khaled!]

Xgrid functionality is attained through other methods - not modification of ffmpeg.

If I added Xgrid functionality INSIDE the ffmpeg binary, I would definitely release that code to the ffmpeg group, although I don't think it would ever be accepted in the project...

This is interesting... isquint uses ffmpeg to convert video, if this also uses ffmpeg, they are in violation of a license by not abiding by the LGPL, if any changes were made to support XGrid...

just burned a DVD, it doesn't give the ability to create a menu, which is a bummer. it does give you the ability to skip from one video to the other, but if you've a ton of files in it at 18hours worth, that's a serious pain.

tried it out in our vhs-dvd recorder (panasonic dmr-es40v) and it kept freezing & getting stuck, had to shut it off & turn it back on to get it out a few times, but on our cheap panasonic vhs-dvd player, it worked fine without issues.

i'm really interested in this 'cuz of its ability to store a large amount of videos at once, perfect for my job, which requires archiving daily projects by our interns. lack of menu capability is a reall deal killer here.

I was excited to see this had a wmv converter. But I converted mp4 to wmv and every few frames it froze for a split sec.
FLV to mp4 looked good. I'd be happier spending the money if the wmv thing worked better.

isquint uses ffmpeg, same as ffmpegx does. So, the quality should be the same, just a different GUI.

If you want to spend 100 bucks on Toast, I guess that would do it, but I burned a disc with a few avi's and some mp4s and it worked great. Every chapter was a new file, but I could still fast forward through the clips. It worked great. As far as I know, Toast can't fit as much on one disc as VH either.

Scott,

Toast Titanium does that very well (make a DVD with or without a menu from several differnt video clips)

I'd be interested to know if anyone's used this to make a DVD that consists of different video clips...I've been looking for something that was easy to use without getting into iMovie/iDVD. I'd assume it doesn't generate any menus for the DVD, which isn't ideal, but I could live with it. I may give it a try.

I would love to hear comments from people how have compared this with www.ffmpegx.com and where each. Is the simplicity of VisualHub better overall than the more options and more cluttered interface of ffmpegx.

Thanks,

Randy

It does well over 10x what iSquint does....it's like iSquint for EVERY FORMAT of video-not just iPods, and it has a lot of bonus features (like DVD burning and XGrid) as well.

Definitely worth every penny.
