More on the Meatpacking Apple Store

Let's clear something up: as odd as it sounds, there really truly is a hip, fashionable and glamorous New York City neighborhood called "the meatpacking district." That's what it is: many meat wholesalers and associated businesses are located on Manhattan's far West Side, hemmed in by long-gentrified Chelsea to the north and the West Village to the south.

Mixed among the meat markets are other meat markets: hot bars like Lotus and Hogs & Heifers call the MPD home, and apparently soon so will Apple's new Manhattan store. It's expected to occupy the former Western Beef supermarket building at 401 West 14th Street (Google Maps | Google Earth links) with a massive new outlet.

The New York Post reported that Apple's lease for the site includes 32,000 square feet of space, spread across three floors of the low-rise building. If Soho is the boutique, and 5th Avenue is the Tiffany's, then 14th Street is going to be the Costco of Apple Stores (except, of course, for the bargain pricing). Personally, I'm just thrilled that there's finally going to be an Apple Store I can visit on my lunch break.

In response to Leonard's question, the new space is going for $400/yr per square foot. That's almost $13 million a year in rent. Those iPhones better sell big.

I live and work within a 10 minute walk of this location, so I see myself making frequent detours on my way home!

Also Hogs and Heifers is hardly a "hot" MePa bar, at least not in the trendy and fashionable sense that Apple is trying to associate itself with. Not that I go to trendy MePa bars. I hope the Apple Store will be open 24 hours though!

I, too, have heard of it but have know nothing of it, and I'm a bloody American.

I wonder how much this 32k/sqft store will impact Apple's excessive profits per/sqft.

South Loop - Chicago, southern section of the main business district. I wouldn't expect a ton of people outside Chicago to know that, either. I didn't know any part of any loop till I moved here.

BTW, we have our own version of the MPD--River West (just west of the West Loop) ... and it's undergoing the same rapid gentrification NYC's MPD has/is. Now where's our Apple store??

Well, I've briefly heard references to the meatpacking district on shows like Law & Order, but never heard it clarified (I suppose it's on Wikipedia but never remembered to look).

I live in the midwest (but in a large city), not the east coast. Thus I appreciate little bits of info on things like this.

So thanks, TUAW.

The reason for that location is simple; more so that Soho, the meatpacking district is overflowing with publishing/fashion/tech companies in massive loft offices, and they ALL USE MACS.

That store will be the biggest mover of pro Mac equipment, just watch.

I've never heard of South Loop. NYC is a very prominent city, but I don't think anything should be assumed of outsiders. I don't know much about it, the only hard knowledge I currently remember is that Houston in Houston St is pronounced differently from Houston, Texas.

Sitting here in my South Loop office (presumably no explanation needed for U.S. readers), I happen to have heard of the meatpacking district but would not be surprised if many had not. Anyway, out here in flyover country, we pronounce it "Kansas City." (Actually, I have no idea how much meat is processed in Kansas City these days but when I think meat industry, places like KC and Omaha come to mind more than lower Manhattan.)

Thanks for the link to the blog, Mike!

Funny you provide Google Maps and Google Earth links, since this new store will only be a block or two away from the new Google offices in Manhattan just up 9th Ave. Now all of them can drop by on their lunch break too.
