Rig of the Week: Cube all-in-one

This week's rig is another Cube mod. Reader bigtimeproducer has posted a picture of an Apple Cube case that has been stripped clean and retro-fitted with a Mac mini, external hard drive and an Airport Extreme. It looks cool, and probably gets a good wireless signal (seeing as the basestation is inches away).

I have 2 of those vantec cases [the bottom thing with the blue light] and they get pretty hot [and are pretty noisy] when they are being used for a long time.

I think it would have been better with the inside opaque thing still in there. It would look like a cube, but have all sorts of amazing things inside.

Also, for the first time in 3 weeks, a proper rig of the week!

Sexy. Does it get enough airflow? I'd consider this, but my Mini is a G4, too, so cannibalizing a Cube seems pointless. Not to mention they seem to be retaining value on eBay.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Although it is more likely that the airport is wired to the mini and broadcasting the internet connection rather than receiving it.

Otherwise, why not plug the mini directly into the internet source?

Eek! I work for a company that builds routers, APs, etc for major players like D-Link and word on the street is that two 802.11a/b/g/n radios should always be at least six feet apart. May consider shutting off the Airport card in the mini and making a 6" Ethernet cable instead.
