ScreenFlow: The killer screencasting app is here
Whether you love them or hate them, screencasts made on Macs just got exponentially better. We at TUAW are in awe of the latest contender for your screencasting love: ScreenFlow, from Vara Software (the maker of Wirecast and Videocue). The feature set is, well, unbelievable in comparison to what is currently available on our platform of choice. And it's an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink solution, with a fantastic editor, amazing effects and simultaneous recording of a video camera (or iSight), your full screen, microphone audio and computer audio without even kicking up my fans. Am I gushing? Definitely.
The fans on my MacBook Pro tend to go nuts after a little while of full-screen recording. Screenium was pretty good with that, but it was only a fraction of the solution that ScreenFlow seems to be. The real magic of ScreenFlow starts after the recording is finished. Once you're in the editor, you find that it's tracked all of your movements, foreground windows, keypresses, etc. with precision.
You can cut and fade, zoom and rotate, add callouts for foreground windows or mouse clicks ... I'm still in amazement. No longer will I need Mouseposé; not only does it automate the process of highlighting the mouse position and calling out clicks wherever you want them, it relieves any need to be hitting hotkeys to turn it on and off while you record. Is this finally the Mac Camtasia? Quite probably.
ScreenFlow costs $99.99 and is available for purchase. A fully-functional (watermarked) demo is right here along with a screencast that's seriously worth watching.

Record only part of the screen: You don't do that with Screenflow, you record the whole thing. Then you can either add a video action, or, if you really only want part of the screen, use the "square in a square" button right above the timeline (on the left) and resize the canvas.
Crashing: I'm using Version 1.0 (9821) and am not crashing, although I'm only using the demo and doing 1-3 minute tests.
Waiting for Camtasia: A document on their web site said they wouldn't match Windows Camtasia until sometime in 2009 -- I've done dozens and dozens of screencasts with Camtasia but Screenflow appears at this point to give me 95% of what I need. And at a price point of $99 it would be foolish of me to wait for Techsmith.
I may not switch completely away from Camtasia for the simple fact that I think my Windows customers will be confused if I'm showing them a Mac program (I could be underestimating them, though).
no feature to export to a flash video with player controls?
I thought this looked perfect until I realized I can't export to a flash video with controls to put on a web page.
Oh i have just bought the app and it works quite well - though I have experienced some crashes already! so i think this is a app that currently needs to be used as "better save than sorry" kind-of-idea :-D

Sorry Camtasia Studio does not hold a candle to being able to grab your full screen at full speed with two videos going.
With no Frame Drops
This Screenflow is a game changer! I am totally blown away that it can do what it does. And its sooo easy to use.
They have to work on the Keystroke and Modifier key press animations... they are useless now.
Other than that the program did start to degrade after about an hour of testing. But people who are crashing... check your system and stop whining cause I never crashed once.
I haven't seen Camtasia Studio (since I haven't needed to do anything like this on Windows) so I just checked out the product page. ScreenFlow has a price advantage ($99 to $299), though we don't know what TechSmith'll charge for the Mac version.
I'm sure that it'll be great for people in cross platform environments (especially if they make files cross-compatible for collaboration).
Correction: It just crashed immediately after recording. I'll wait for 1.1

Just getting started looking this over. I like the concept, need to play a little more. It's nice looking...
Hasn't crashed yet, but I haven't tried much...
Congrats to the Vara team on the release! Cool stuff. Competition is a great thing and will only lead to better and better products for Mac users. Let the games begin! :0)

Troy you guys have nothing to worry about. I'll admit I was impressed initially by its looks but feature wise it has nothing on CS - I know CS Mac will be a million times better and I'm not buying anything until that comes out.
February 15 2008 at 9:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCS will definitely rock, but in the meantime for $99 this is going to save me a lot of headaches. And between now and the end of this year Vara has plenty of time to add extra functionality. Which *could* make for a very nice head to head. Either way, when you compare it to the half-baked crap we've had to work with so far, this is a big step in the right direction.

What is FreshApps?
Also is there anyway to record just part of the screen or is that just not necessary anymore?
This is definitely a huge step forward. I just blogged it somewhat breathless.
However, buggy is an understatement. System audio is recording at the wrong speed as I write this, it crashes at least 50% of the time, and internal mic isn't recording at all.
Looking forward to some fixes, as this has a lot of potential to really streamline my screencasting workflow and save on some of the FCP/AE/Motion process at least.
