$1.7 million for Greensboro Apple Store

An anonymous reader also tells Ed that the store's construction cost a pretty penny -- $1.7 million for 5,873 square feet, according to the building permit. Unfortunately, we're not sure if that's more expensive than usual or not: most retail places seem to cost a little less according to this, but then again, $1.6 million per store for Apple is about right, according to past numbers.
Either way, hopefully the wrap will be taken off the store soon -- we don't think Ged can wait that much longer.

The title of the story is kinda misleading - according to the story, the permit didn't cost $1.7 million, the construction did. But the title makes it seem like the permit cost that much.

Would it kill you to mention that you're talking about Greensboro, NC? I had to follow the links to see if you meant North Carolina or another Greensboro.
That being said, I can't wait for this to open, I'm in Winston Salem quite often which is just a hop skip & a jump from Greensboro :)

Come on, Apple only builds stores in thriving cities that people have heard of.

There's an Apple Store in Freehold, NJ, and I doubt anyone outside of NJ knows what Freehold is.

Can't wait for this store to open... less than 20 minutes from me. Now I won't have to drive to the Triangle or Charlotte to get to an apple store! YAY!

Its pretty funny how some places treat Apple Stores. When Crabtree opened, the mall security refused to listen to the employees, and were utterly unprepared for the crowd. Same thing happened for the iPhone and iPhone 3G launches.
On Panther night, I watched a security guard at Southpoint try to tell one of the assistant managers he couldn't take pictures of the gathered crowd.
These hick mall owners and their rent-a-cops just don't get it.

Mall owners are usually so stuck on themselves they don't know real gems when they get them. Owners of retail real estate are full of themselves... they're little kingmakers that have large corporations by the balls over a few thousand feet of retail space. In my town the malls all sit half empty as the mall owners have increased rent per store to offset the reduced cut of sales they get. (yes malls actually get a take on daily sales!!!) way to help out the companies that draw in customers and pay the bills!! It's like this everywhere.

When will it occur to Apple the downside of being a retailer and then have to go the Starbucks route with massive closings? The line between brillance and hubris is usually only seen when looking back.

Apple only builds stores in areas where there is known to be high demand for their products, unlike say Starbucks or Home Depot. There's a Starbucks every few miles, and there's a Home Depot every few miles (where I live at least). Apple makes more in profits per square foot than any other retailer, so I think they know exactly where they should be building their stores, and they will probably get a good idea when to stop.

When their profits start to slide like the other companies, then maybe.
That's one of the benefits of having $22b in the bank, being able to ride out the storm.

Not only is the title misleading, but the whole story is non-news. $1.7M for construction. ok. wow, I'm shocked. Then you go on to point out that $1.6M is average for an Apple store. So, what's the news?

oh, then your Greensboro link that we click to find out which Greensboro you're actully referring to takes us to a Sydney and Mississippi Store opening story. what?

$289 per sq ft is not unusual. The construction permit did not cost $1.7M. This article is pointless.

Why was this article written? Pointless article, and an awful title. The permit did not cost $1.7 million, and according to your own article, the cost was average.

There are currently only 3 Apple stores in the state. Durham, Raleigh, and Charlotte. That's a pretty big gap of uncovered space. I'm from Durham originally, and was at the opening of both the Durham and Raleigh stores.
I went to college in Winston-Salem, and we were aching for an Apple store nearby the whole time. Driving from Winston to Raleigh, Durham, or Charlotte is a pretty long trek. There are tons of colleges in Greensboro and the surrounding cities. The Film Program at the School of the Arts in Winston will be able to keep this Greensboro store open alone. This store is long overdue.
I'm glad for the people down there who will be able to take advantage of this new store. I moved to NY 2 years ago, and love the easy access to Apple stores up here.

Hey now,
You guys get all of the good roads thanks to that skewed road money distribution scheme run out of Raleigh. Fayetteville is getting their loop while we wait with the pie slice in 485 until 2012. This is just fruit flavored retribution for those of us west of 95 :-). Besides, if any military town in the Carolinas is going to get an Apple store we all know it should be Havelock!
