Safari Extension highlight: A Cleaner YouTube

With the addition of the
Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website over the last few days, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.

Here's a nice extension for those who visit YouTube but dislike its visual clutter. A Cleaner YouTube by 200ok Web Consulting removes all of the ads, sidebar items, comments and pretty much everything else that isn't the video you're watching. Once installed, youtube.com simply shows a search field. Enter your criteria and hit return to review the neatly-presented results.

Select a video to watch and it appears centered in a field of white all by its lonesome. Nice, eh?You'll notice that some features are missing, like comments and the embed link, but who needs those, right? The developer says that comments at least are in the works.

If you like things to be nice and tidy, check out A Cleaner YouTube.

Even the logo gets different with that addon so the last time I was in at youtube I thought theyd changed the whole look of it (ie Google themselves). It wasnt until now when I read this article that I realised that it was the addon that made those changes :)...thats how good it is :D

If you use a mac and OS6.4 and use Safari do not download this if you live in the UK and make use of the BBC iPlayer to watch TV programmes. It screws it up. I have contacted the developer and he said he will look into this

If only somebody would make a similar extension for the increasingly, maddeningly, ad and clutter-laden http icanhascheezburger.com and associated sites…

I know they have to make money, but jeez…

Between Glimmer Blocker and ClickToFlash, the Internet is already pretty clean for me.

I don't mind the ads. It's the stupid comments. I used to let my kids watch cute videos, but the comments have gotten out of hand. A little kitten video has comments like "hey f***ot, you b**ch"

Really? Why is that needed. It's a video of a kitten! Now YouTube is a blocked site for us.

1) Missing comments actually improves the site, in my opinion. I find YouTube philosophers to be the lowest point of humanity.

2) @Stewy, it's fair game for you to create ads and some are really great, but many are in done in bad taste and are really annoying. I think it's human nature to try to minimize our exposure to advertising. I mute the commercials on my TV, sorry.

3) I installed this extension and loved it but my search bar promptly dissapeared. Anyone else have this issue?

my search bar is still visible.
maybe you have other extensions or custom styles conflicting.

combine this with adblock, it's truly clean.

I kinda like how when I go on youtube to watch a video I have in mind I find myself a couple of hours later still watching videos trying to remember why I first came on.
