Certification Updates Expand ‘Works with Apple Home’ Badge

The “Works with Apple Home” badge will soon appear on more smart home devices, thanks to updates in the certification process. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) aims to simplify testing, making it easier and more affordable for manufacturers to certify their products for compatibility with Apple HomeKit.

Streamlined Certification for Matter Devices

The CSA recently announced two new certification programs to reduce the complexity and cost of smart home device certifications. These programs leverage the CSA’s Interoperability Testing Facility, also known as the Interop Lab. One significant change allows Apple to accept Matter certification results directly from the Interop Lab. This means manufacturers no longer need Apple-specific tests to earn the “Works with Apple Home” badge, provided their devices meet Matter standards.

Benefits for Consumers and Manufacturers

For consumers, this change ensures that more products will carry the Apple Home badge. It simplifies the buying process by making it easy to identify devices compatible with HomeKit networks without extra research.

For manufacturers, the FastTrack Recertification Program offers a streamlined path to recertify products after software updates. This reduces the time and resources needed to deploy essential updates like bug fixes and security patches. Additionally, the Portfolio Certification Program allows manufacturers to certify multiple products under a single application. This approach saves time and boosts efficiency, particularly for those offering extensive product lines.

A Step Toward Interoperability

The certification changes align with the industry’s broader move toward improved interoperability. Google and Samsung plan to implement similar processes later in 2025 for their respective smart home platforms, Google Home and SmartThings. These updates signify a collective effort to create a more unified and accessible smart home ecosystem.

The streamlined certification process benefits consumers by expanding device options and simplifying product compatibility. It also reflects a significant shift toward greater collaboration among major players in the smart home industry.
