Apple has not updated the Mac Pro since 2023, and new reports suggest the wait may continue. According to recent industry reporting, Apple has placed the Mac Pro “on the back burner,” with no meaningful update planned for 2026.
Bloomberg sources indicate Apple now views the Mac Studio as its primary high-end desktop. As a result, the Mac Pro may no longer play a central role in Apple’s future lineup.

Mac Studio Surges Ahead
The shift becomes clearer when comparing hardware. The latest Mac Studio uses Apple’s newer M3 Ultra chip. It supports more CPU and GPU cores, up to 512GB of unified memory, and as much as 16TB of storage. By contrast, the current Mac Pro, powered by the M2 Ultra, tops out at lower limits across several key areas.
In addition, the Mac Studio supports up to four 8K displays. The Mac Pro supports only three. The Mac Pro also lacks Thunderbolt 5, which further widens the gap.
M5 Ultra May Skip the Mac Pro
Apple is reportedly developing an M5 Ultra chip expected to arrive next year. However, sources say Apple plans to use it only in the Mac Studio. If true, this decision would cement the Mac Studio as Apple’s flagship professional desktop.
Because of this, analysts now question whether Apple will quietly discontinue the Mac Pro once the next Mac Studio launches.
PCIe Expansion Still Matters to Some
Despite falling behind, the Mac Pro still offers one advantage: PCIe expansion. It provides space for capture cards, audio interfaces, and other specialized hardware. Some professional users, such as film editors and audio engineers, still depend on these internal upgrades.
However, the Mac Pro is heavier, bulkier, and far more expensive than a Mac Studio with similar performance. For most users, the Mac Studio delivers better value and newer technology.
A Complicated History With Pro Users
Apple’s relationship with pro desktop users has long been uneven. The 2013 “trash can” Mac Pro failed due to poor thermal design and limited expansion. Apple corrected course in 2019 with a modular Mac Pro, yet momentum appears to have stalled again.
For now, Apple continues to sell the M2 Ultra Mac Pro. Still, unless plans change, 2026 may mark another quiet year—and possibly the beginning of the end—for Apple’s most powerful desktop.
