Amazon has agreed to acquire Globalstar in a deal valued at over $11 billion. This move could reshape satellite services used by Apple devices.
Globalstar currently powers key iPhone features, including Emergency SOS via satellite. As a result, the acquisition places Amazon at the center of a critical part of Apple’s ecosystem.

What the Deal Includes
The agreement gives Amazon control of Globalstar’s satellite network, infrastructure, and global spectrum licenses. These assets will strengthen Amazon’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite project, known as Amazon Leo.
Additionally, Globalstar shareholders will receive cash or Amazon stock as part of the transaction. The total deal value is estimated at around $11.5 billion.
Apple’s Role and Continued Partnership
Apple has played a key role in Globalstar’s development. In 2024, the company invested $1.1 billion and secured a 20% stake.
Importantly, both Apple and Amazon have agreed to maintain existing satellite services. This means current iPhone and Apple Watch features will continue without disruption.
Furthermore, the companies plan to collaborate on future satellite technologies. This partnership could lead to new features and improved performance for Apple devices.
Better Connectivity for Users
In the short term, users will notice little change. However, the long-term impact could be significant. As Amazon integrates Globalstar into its network, more satellites will enter orbit.
This expansion should improve signal strength and reliability. It may also increase available bandwidth, allowing messages to send faster and more consistently.
Although advanced features like video calls remain unlikely for now, messaging and emergency services could become more efficient.
Future Features on the Horizon
The deal also opens the door for innovation. Apple has explored ideas such as improved satellite connectivity that works without precise phone positioning.
For example, future designs may allow users to stay connected without pointing their device toward the sky. This change could make satellite communication more practical for everyday use.
A Strategic Shift in Space Technology
Overall, Amazon’s acquisition marks a major shift in satellite connectivity. It strengthens competition while supporting Apple’s growing reliance on space-based communication.
As both companies deepen their partnership, users may benefit from faster, more reliable, and more accessible satellite services in the years ahead.
