A breathtaking moment from space has captured global attention. During the Artemis II mission, NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman recorded a stunning “Earthset” video using an iPhone.
The clip shows Earth slowly disappearing behind the Moon’s horizon. As seen in the image on page 1, the view creates a striking visual similar to a sunset, but in reverse.

Filmed Using Everyday Technology
Surprisingly, the video was not captured with high-end professional equipment. Instead, Wiseman used an iPhone 17 Pro Max.
He filmed the 53-second video through a docking hatch window. Although the view was not ideal, the compact size of the iPhone made filming possible.
Meanwhile, other astronauts used larger cameras, including a Nikon DSLR with a 400mm lens. However, the simplicity of the iPhone setup proved effective.
How the “Earthset” Was Captured
The video shows the spacecraft flying past the Moon. As the clip progresses, Earth gradually disappears from view. This effect creates the “Earthset” phenomenon.
Wiseman explained that he used 8x zoom to match what the human eye might see. As described on page 3, the footage was shared without edits or cropping, preserving its authenticity.
Apple’s Role in Space Exploration
The Artemis II mission has also highlighted Apple’s growing presence in space technology. Before launch, NASA approved the iPhone for use after extensive safety checks.
However, the device had limitations. It could not use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and functioned mainly as a camera.
Still, the results demonstrate how modern smartphones can perform in extreme environments.
Changing the Future of Space Imaging
This video marks a shift in how space moments are captured. Traditionally, astronauts relied on specialized cameras. Now, consumer devices can deliver impressive results.
Moreover, the success of this footage suggests that future missions may use similar tools. As a result, space exploration could become more accessible to the public.
A New Perspective on Technology
The “Earthset” video highlights the power of simple tools in extraordinary settings. It shows how innovation can transform everyday devices into instruments of discovery.
Ultimately, this moment not only showcases space exploration but also demonstrates how far smartphone technology has come.
