Apple could be preparing a major upgrade for Image Playground, its image-generation tool introduced as part of Apple Intelligence. A new report suggests the feature may receive a significant boost in iOS 27 through upgraded Apple Foundation Models, potentially addressing criticism over weak image quality.
Since launch, Image Playground has struggled to impress users. While Apple positioned it as a creative AI feature for generating stylised images and custom visuals, many users found the results inconsistent or underwhelming. That has made it one of Apple’s least celebrated artificial intelligence tools.

Smarter Models Could Change the Experience
According to the report, Apple’s improved Foundation Models could dramatically strengthen Image Playground’s performance. The changes may also allow users to access third-party image generation models through system-level APIs, expanding creative options beyond Apple’s own technology.
That would mark a notable shift in Apple’s AI strategy. Instead of relying only on in-house models, the company could offer more flexibility while keeping its own privacy-focused tools available.
However, privacy concerns may grow if users choose external services. Apple’s current model keeps many AI tasks on-device or within Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, which the company promotes as more secure.
Genmoji May Also Become More Useful
The same report suggests Genmoji, Apple’s AI emoji generator, may become more proactive in iOS 27. Instead of waiting for users to manually create custom emoji, the system could suggest ready-made Genmoji directly in predictive text recommendations.
That could make the feature feel more integrated into everyday messaging rather than a hidden novelty.
Apple’s Writing Tools, by contrast, have generally received a warmer response. This highlights a broader issue for Apple Intelligence: productivity tools have landed better than creative generative features.
Apple Still Faces AI Pressure
Even with these reported improvements, Apple remains behind leading AI competitors in image generation. Rivals already offer more advanced, photorealistic, and flexible tools. Apple, meanwhile, appears focused on safer and more controlled outputs.
That cautious strategy could appeal to privacy-conscious users. Still, consumers increasingly expect powerful AI experiences.
If the rumoured upgrades arrive, iOS 27 may give Image Playground a much-needed second chance. For Apple, improving creative AI is no longer optional—it is becoming part of the broader competition shaping the future of personal technology.
