Apple is preparing a distinct artificial intelligence strategy for China. Instead of relying mainly on an outside large language model, the company has reportedly trained its own system for the market.
According to the attached report, Apple Intelligence in China will use an Apple-trained large language model. The company developed the model in partnership with Alibaba. However, Alibaba’s Qwen technology will still play a role in the Chinese version of the service.

Apple Takes a Different AI Route in China
The approach marks a notable shift from Apple’s AI strategy in other markets. The report says Apple uses Google Gemini technology across the United States and many other territories. Meanwhile, Apple also maintains its own Foundation Models and offers ChatGPT integration for Siri.
However, those outside AI services face different conditions in China. Neither ChatGPT, Gemini nor Anthropic’s Claude is available there, according to the document. Therefore, Apple needs a localized system that can meet Chinese requirements.
Alibaba, Qwen and Baidu Join the Strategy
Apple will not operate entirely alone. The report says Qwen will feature in some form on Apple devices sold in China. In addition, technology from Baidu will support the broader effort.
These partnerships reflect China’s complex rules for artificial intelligence. In practice, foreign technology companies often need local partners to navigate the country’s regulatory framework.
Content controls also remain an important issue. Previous reports indicated that Alibaba would help ensure Apple Intelligence complies with local censorship requirements. That oversight could affect both Qwen and Apple’s proprietary model.
Launch Date Remains Unclear
China has approved Apple Intelligence, but Apple has not announced an official launch date. Still, signs suggest the technology may be close to release. The service briefly appeared in March, apparently by accident. Apple Support also published and later removed instructions for using Qwen on a Mac.
The rollout could carry major strategic importance. China remains a key Apple market, and the report says recent iPhone 17 sales have exceeded the company’s expectations there.
Ultimately, Apple’s China strategy shows how regional rules can reshape global AI products. Rather than offering one universal system, Apple appears ready to combine its own technology with carefully selected local partners.
