Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro builds on last year’s flagship rather than replacing its formula. The design remains familiar, but Apple has focused its biggest changes on performance, photography and artificial intelligence.
The new model starts at $1,199 for 256GB, compared with $1,099 for the iPhone 17 Pro. It also introduces a 2TB option for users who need significantly more storage.
Familiar Design, Much Faster Hardware
Both generations use the same 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display. Resolution, ProMotion and peak brightness of 3,000 nits also remain unchanged. However, Apple has reduced the space needed for the TrueDepth camera. This allows a smaller Dynamic Island and room for three Live Activities.
Inside, the difference becomes much clearer. The new A20 Pro uses a 2-nanometer process and features a seven-core GPU. Apple also doubled the Neural Engine configuration and increased memory bandwidth by 50%.
Initial Geekbench 7 results show the impact. The iPhone 18 Pro scored 4,006 in single-core testing versus 3,153 for its predecessor. Meanwhile, multi-core performance rose from 8,764 to 11,460. Metal graphics scores jumped about 47%.
Camera Upgrade Targets Serious Photographers
Apple retains three 48-megapixel rear cameras, but the main camera now gains a variable aperture. It can move between f/1.48 and f/4.0. Therefore, photographers gain more direct control over focus and natural background blur.
Moreover, Apple Reference Image can use signed sensor data to help verify that a photograph is genuine. The feature could prove useful for journalists and others who need to establish image authenticity.
Battery Improves, but Is It Worth Upgrading?
Battery life increases from 33 to 36 hours of local video playback. Fast charging also improves, reaching 50% in around 15 minutes with a suitable 60W or higher adapter.
Still, iPhone 17 Pro owners may find little reason to upgrade after only one year. The strongest gains target AI-heavy workloads, photography and demanding performance. For owners of older iPhones, however, the iPhone 18 Pro represents a much more substantial step forward.
