Freeware February: NetNewsWire Lite

NetNewsWireNetNewsWire Lite is the little brother of the Mac OS X application that I spend most of my time using; NetNewsWire.  It is the best of breed news reader on any platform, and if you don’t have a copy of the free version then I am not sure why you are even using a Mac.

The free version isn’t as feature rich as the paid version, but you can’t beat the price. Check out a comparison of the two versions after you have used the free version for awhile.

Plus, the application is only getting better with the recent release of NetNewsWire Lite 2 beta (I have been running the beta of NetNewsWire for awhile, and I have only experienced good things.

Can you tell I really like this application? Download it, use it, and love it.

Good point on the longevity of some web-based services. I'm not too scared of Bloglines failing, though. Especially, with their purchase by Ask Jevees, which I blogged about last weekend. http://erik.weibust.net/blog_archives/000265bloglines_sold.html Erik

I prefer to have it locally. With web-based services you never know if they are going to be around next week or if they will change there services. Bloglines was just sold to AskJeeves. Will things remain as is or will AskJeeves make changes to pay for their acquisition?

For the life of me I can't understand why people use "machine-based" RSS-readers over quality, web-based alternatives like Bloglines. Don't most of the readers of this blog work on more then one computer? And if you're like me, you're addicted to the RSS feeds you read. So I am always flipping back to my reader to see if anything new has shown up. With a web-based reader I'm not having to go through posts and say "no I read that at work, or "I read that at the house". It's one reader that knows when I've read something. Simple and easy. Like RSS - Really Simple Syndication.... Maybe I'm crazy, maybe the features that apps like NetNewsWire offer are far greater then the web-based alternatives and I really should give them another look.
