Pretty Pleased with Panther
My article, Pretty Pleased with Panther,
is up and running over at Apple Matters. The article is an opinion piece
where I muse about the past year and a few months with Panther. I think
Panther has been a great OS that has served me very well, and while I
am looking forward to Tiger, I don't think it's going to be the same
breakthrough-OS in stability that Panther was, and I'm not looking
forward to the inevitable bugs that will pop-up in the early iterations
of the OS. Here's the intro snippet: "With Tiger right around the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look back at the year (and a few months) of Panther. Overall, I’d have to say that I have been very pleased with Panther, and, perhaps as a result, I’m not feeling overly jazzed about Tiger. Don’t get me wrong. I’m interested to see many of the Tiger improvements; however, a good handful of these improvements are already possible in Panther with the help of a few 3rd party gems. And the few things that I despise about the Mac OS X interface don’t show much sign of changing when Tiger comes out." Give it a read and let me know what you think. Will you miss Panther?

I am looking forward to all features of Tiger, but then again, I have not made the switch as of yet. I am holding off to see if Apple makes any hardware announcements next week. I don't particularly want to do a software upgrade, so hopefully it will be preinstalled.

Personally, I can't wait for Tiger. This is partly my natural inclination to always want to try new OSs. It's also the number of nifty new things to try out and play with. While the advancements of Tiger may seem minor to some the advancements to 3rd party apps could well be phenomenal. That, and Spotlight is just the bean. Heck, even development of Quicksilver for Panther stops with the release of Tiger and future versions will only work with Tiger. Dashboard widgets are also separate little entities that you can delete/add at will.
I always get swept up in the newness factor -- I even get some kind of weird thrill out of running Software Update -- so I'm sure I'll upgrade and HOPE that Virtual PC for Mac will work when I reinstall it. If it doesn't, I'll be pretty well screwed until Microsoft brings out a patch.

Dashboard is just much, much slicker and it doesn't seem to leak memory left and right unlike. Additionally, I'm not sure I agree with your assertion that only Konfab's widgets are separate from the OS, as Dashboard widgets are also separate little entities that you can delete/add at will.

I do, however, think that spotlight integration into various applications will be really nice. Konfabulator vs. Dashboard: I am looking forward to Dashboard, but only for the fact that, although knowing about Konfabulator for the past couple of months, I never gave it a try. iChatAV vs. Adium: Right now, I use Adium, not iChatAV. I have tried a ton of different instant messaging applications, for both OS X and Windows, I have even written a couple of my own out of sheer frustration, and Adium is by far, the best IM application I have ever used. Tell me one thing, why doesn't iChatAV let you have your own account show on your buddy list? Safari vs. Firefox (haha, sorry): After giving Safari a try over the past week, I will definitely give Safari RSS a shot, so I guess I'll see how that goes. For now, I am still a faithful Firefox user.

From what ive read i probably won't be able to justify the tiger upgrade until 10.5 African Whooping Cat comes out...I wish i had multiple macs, or an external, but i am cheap and don't want to dish out the cash.
