Tiger Bits: QuickTime Nag
This
is a bit annoying: After updating to Tiger, I lost my QuickTime Pro
registration and have to purchase a new license to get Pro working
again (even though I own all of Apple's Pro Video apps, albeit in their
pre-Tiger incarnations). So fine. I'll eventually buy QuickTime
Pro.In the meantime, whenever you launch QuickTime regular, all the Menus list all the pro features, grayed out with a big PRO right next to them. This is a software upgrade-me-nag, imho, and I don't like it one bit.
The fact that I at one point paid for the full Pro version of QuickTime and my old license is no longer good in Tiger makes this nag all the more annoying.

MacWorld Mag spoke about that all Pro users will have to upgrade to the new version of QT Pro.. QuickTime Pro 6 users who upgrade to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) will not be able to use their current license codes for the newly included QuickTime Pro 7.

I, too, am greatly annoyed by this. We paid for Final Cut Pro, which came with a license for Quicktime! That license ought to still be valid, just like every other license for every other shareware program. We shouldn't have to purchase another license just to use Quicktime with its pro features, since we paid for it when we bought Final Cut!

yeah we were all warned about this a while back. just be greatful that you aer able to buy it. those with the pre release version had no place to buy a serial code.

Wasn't aware of the QT Pro limitation. And they let me go ahead and buy a license on-line last Saturday that now doesn't work. Thanks for the heads up, Mister Jobs.

You can still run the quicktime 6 player if you restore it from a backup or something and it has all of its old pro features, the new pro license is required for the quicktime 7 player. Quicktime 6 player (PRO) seems to work fine with quicktime 7 "under the hood" so to speak.

I know it is a bummer having paid for Pro and now having to pay full price again with QuickTime 7. I have found that if I have a registered QT Pro 6 player on a Mac and zip it for a backup copy, then install QT7 and replace the QT7 player with my old QT6 player that I get all the new compression including H.264 using the QT6 Pro player. While this is a hack, it will get you by until you have another $30 to give Apple. I just compressed a video using H.264 and the QT6 Pro Player and the size is small and the quality very good.
