More than one hundred iBook bargain hunters didn't get the memo

now hear thisThe Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that more than 100 people - who obviously don't read TUAW - showed up at the Richmond International Raceway in Virginia yesterday, hoping to get their grubby little paws on some cheap iBooks. The only problem is that the sale is next week, and it's restricted to Henrico County residents. Duh.

In case you've been napping, here's a recap of where things stand now:

"1,000 laptops will go on sale to Henrico residents and taxpayers at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Richmond International Raceway. Gates will open at 7 a.m. Each machine costs $50, and cash and checks will be accepted.

Potential buyers must bring proof of residency, such as a driver's license or a Henrico real estate tax bill. There's a one-per-person limit, and all sales are final. For more information, check www.co.henrico.va.us.

Don't make me tell you again.

Another day, another Times Dispatch piece on $50 iBooks. Yesterday (Aug. 10) was the day for the past year's seniors to pick up their iBook computers. Seems that a number of them didn't get back the ones they had been using and taken such good care of over the past four years (assuming these aren't the students who discovered the water-shedding properties of while lexan). http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD/MGArticle/RTD_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031784373163 Apparently, the county had some IT staff around to help the students who's new-to-you laptops didn't work. I doubt they'll do the same for the general population next week. Anyway, 9 out of 10 working after all that seems pretty good, doesn't it?

There was a nice piece in the Times Dispatch the previous day from a former Henrico High School senior on the iBooks and their "value." My favorite quote is that "They've been used as umbrellas making the dash from the parking lot." Yeah, I'd drive 12+ hours from Florida to Virginia for one of those. http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD/MGArticle/RTD_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031784321130 Anyway, with any luck these people had some other reason to be in Richmond yesterday than just iBook shaped umbrellas. Otherwise, that is the poorest trip planning since the Griswalds drove to Wally World. At least they could enjoy some of the sights in Richmond while they were here. I'll try and make it out to the RIR next Tuesday and get some photos and such of the madness for all those who read TUAW regularly and know to avoid the trip.

Man, what a sad sight that must have been. I really with some TUAW photographers were present for that one. Dinosaurs, narco.
