Mac OS Time Machine
John Wells, of iinfio3d, takes us on a virtual stroll down memory lane with a collection of screenshots ranging from System 1 up to and including Tiger. My, the OS has changed a lot over the last 21 years. This has got me thinking about the OS that I started this crazy Mac adventure running. My first OS was 8.6 on a blueberry iMac, yes I was a little late to the game.
What OS was your first Mac running?

And how person can become starter?
December 15 2005 at 4:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy first experience on a Mac was when I was 5 and I would sneak on my brother's SE he got from a teacher. It had OS 7.0.1, IIRC. I owned my first mac at 6, when I got an SE/30, with 7.5, then I later got a MacIICI with 7.6.8.

My stepfather came home with a 'Mac' from a trade show in February 1984, one he was authorized to by in his capacity as manager of computing and information services for a major university at the time. I have been using them steadily ever since! :)

Couldn't get hubby to buy up until one of the schools put their IIGS's up for bid. We got one, sold the IIe and one year later got my first Mac (finally!!) cause the IIGS just wasn't capable of doing what I needed it to do. I thought it was running System 6 but after reading the posts maybe it was 7. When Apple announced X I jumped on it. Now 9 (which felt like I was slipstreamin', baby) seems clunky and creaky.
August 29 2005 at 10:09 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat brought back memories. In 1983 I had a friend who was Navy engineering tech, the kind of guy who built Heathkits. I can remember very clearly telling him that I just couldn't see owning a computer. I wouldnt know what to do with it. Fast forward to the summer of 1986. All I knew about computers was the Wang word processor. One day, a supervisor sat me down in front of this funny little machine. He told me it was a computer, the thing on the right was something called a mouse, and that I knew how to use it. Then he abandoned me! Just left me there with my mouth hanging open! I mean, who does that? You can imagine how surprised I was to find out I did know how to use it, and proceeded to play with Macpaint for the rest of the afternoon. What can I say? I instantly fell in love, and suddenly knew what I could do with a computer. Five macs later, a G5 iMac sits on my desk at home. On the shelf above is a dual-floppy SE. I keep it around to remind myself just how far we've come.

Then at school we used SE30s with OS 7x, then got my first PowerPC (7200) in 1996 and it came with 7.5.1. I have dutifully upgraded through OS 7.6 > 8 > 8.5 > 8.6 > 9, now at 10.4.2 on my 12" Powerbook.

MacPaint was awesome and easy n' fun. The last thing I think I use LC then my dad switch to PC (Dell - yike!). It took a long time I finally come back to Apple computer - iBook with lately OS 9 include original Mac OS X.

Up to then I had used the BBC micro, pets acorns dragon and all sorts of others with improbable names. There was no instruction manual, which wasn't a problem until I wanted to throw files away. How did you do this? Eventually I phoned apple who told me to put files in the wastebin. What? Unimaginable that it could be so simple. I eventually bought the 128 and the image writer off apple and I still have them - still in working order but a bit slow!
August 29 2005 at 8:11 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFirst machine I owned running Mac OS was my Amiga 1200 back at university, that could run OS 7.5 under emulation for compatibility with my flatmate's LCII (which the 'mig roundly toasted) My first Mac was a PowerBook Ti G4 that shipped with 9.1 and 10.0 - I ran X out of the box. I'd say I was a late starter but since I'd used Macs before and it was only OS X that brought me to the platform, I think of myself as an early adopter.
