Silly Survey Sunday: What's in a name (revisited)?
I put it to you dear readers: Do you name your Macs? If so, what are their names? And, finally, what should I name my new 15-inch PowerBook?

To get an instant map to any address, just go to your Address Book and right click on the address field of any one of your contacts and select "Map Of." The address will then be revealed in Google Maps on Safari. You can do the same if a data detector determines there is an address in an e-mail in Mail.

I've named my computers after characters from Twin Peaks. And the harddrives after locales in Twin Peaks. Hence:

C-Drive: Twin Peaks
D-Drive: The Great Northern
E-Drive: The Black Lodge
Mac mini: BOB
Drive 1: Deer Meadow
iPod mini: Little Man From Another Place

12'' pb.
the little thing is called mansinho, a portuguese word for 'the quiet one'.
i have a surfboard called sanuk, a thai word for
' That beautiful word sums up the Thai people. Sanuk, meaning fun, is apparent in everything that the Thai people do, the belief that anything worth doing, even work, should have an element of fun.
Sanuk is the Thai word for pursuit of happiness.
The word sanuk means to have a good time, to enjoy oneself and to derive pleasure and joy from something. A slang variant for the word is man", which describes the feeling one can get when munching ones favorite food.
It is almost a rule of living for Thai people that whatever they do have to be sanuk". The concept of sanuk goes beyond the having of a good laugh or a good time at a dance or a performance.

I name all the systems I own on my LAN-Windows, Linux, and Mac. The Mac is named Jimmy Tock, and one of the Windows systems has been renamed to Mr. Bunghole from Mr. D Sanchez. The Gentoo server carries the name of Roland Deschain.

My computer take their names from a almost-unknown manga series: I've had Nan?my iMac), Kotomi (a PC laptop), Hachi (a PC) and Amano (my iBook).
My hard drives all have tissue names: Tulle, Velvet, Silk, Cotton, Wool, Denim, Nylon and Kevlar :D

I have been naming my computers and network equipment after Federal government installations. My PowerMac at work is The Pentagon. At home, my firewall is Secret Service, my wireless network is The West Wing, my PowerBook is Air Force One, and my iPod is Marine One.
As far as what you should name your machine, you can't go wrong naming it after famous yet obscure Apple employees. Examples include Tevanian, Ives, Rubenstein, Cook, Oppenhiemer, Shiller, Serlet, etc.

I've never actually given any of my computers pet names. I often call them 'Computer' as in "Now Computer, if we don't start getting on I shall reprogramme you with a very large axe" and occasionally "Evil little machine".
I look after a couple of companies computers and usually go for User-Computer-Iteration naming system eg 'Robin-PB-3' or 'Kim-iMac-2'.
One company I deal with uses the extension numbers from the phone system, which sort of works from a tech support point of view as the phone system shows the extension of the person calling and you can quickly log on to the computer in question but you have to keep the phone records and the computer records up-to-date.

40gb iPod - I call 'miPod'
4gb iPod nano - I call 'helliPod'
And at work, our network system is named after characters from the Sopranos.
