Silly Survey Sunday: What's in a name (revisited)?

New Powerbooks Scott has a 15-inch PowerBook named Ambrose, and I just switched from a 12-inch PowerBook to a new 15-inch 1.67Ghz PowerBook, but I haven't yet come up with a name for my new Mac. My old 12-inch was named Mein Kopf (which is German for 'my head'). Laurie once before asked what's in a name, and as we haven't done a Silly Survey Sunday in a while, I thought I'd make a Silly Survey out of it.

I put it to you dear readers: Do you name your Macs? If so, what are their names? And, finally, what should I name my new 15-inch PowerBook?

I look after a couple of companies computers and usually go for User-Computer-Iteration naming system eg 'Robin-PB-3' or 'Kim-iMac-2'. One company I deal with uses the extension numbers from the phone system, which sort of works from a tech support point of view as the phone system shows the extension of the person calling and you can quickly log on to the computer in question but you have to keep the phone records and the computer records up-to-date.

My 15" PB is named Tomato, after Radical Cowgirl Ed's in Cowboy Bebop. The old old OLD Dell we have at home is named "BakaBaka", because it is StupidStupid.

My 15" PowerBook is named Alphonse, after the character in Fullmetal Alchemist a preteen boy who, as the result of a failed attempt at human alchemy, ended up with his soul bound to a suit of armor. I figured that'd fit quite well for the shiny yet youthful PowerBook. And yeah, I'm an anime geek, if that weren't obvious by now. :-p My old Gateway laptop, Alphonse's predecessor, is named Lapcow. Sort of like a lapdog, but bovine, naturally.

My girlfriends 12" pb is named "Ed Wood" as she uses it to make movies. Both our computers answer to an affectionate "chompy"

Well, my 15" Powerbook was my first Mac and I came on board just after 10.4 was released. So I called mine Fighting Tiger which goes quite well alongside my domain (battlecat.net) and mobile phone bluetooth name (AngryKitty).

In response to Dave Sim (is this where we post responses)---the naming of my hardware began when I got my mac and in the bginning i was up late every night reading manuals and surfing the net downloading new software, etc. and a friend of mine was always joking when I'd be tired the next day "Oh, Mac had you up all night again hunh?!" so it was a little joke we had going. Once she borrowed it, she said, oh, no, she's way too pretty to be a Mac, so I came up with the name Genesis. I changed the name on the HD plus the sharing name, and I actually refer to it as Genesis in normal convo like "I got Genesis a new toy"....my other hardware I only change the volume label but don't refer to them that way in real life...(that would be crazy....)

Well, I can't stand their food, but the names work well for my machines: My powermac g5 is "BigMac" My mac mini is "CheeseBurger" And my little iBook is called "Q-Pounder" (Of course the name for my PC is the result of consuming the above, and the way I feel about the machine... "Vomit")
