About a new hi-res 15" PowerBook

PowerBook corner shotI'm spending my last year in multimedia classes on video editing and motion graphics so, like C.K., I decided to give the 12" PowerBook the boot for a shiny new 15" hi-res book for all the extra screen real estate that video editing begs for. Yes - I know this might seem absolutely nuts on the eve of rumored Macintel books in January, but the big decision breaker is that I simply can't afford to either upgrade to, or wait for, new Intel-friendly version of all the software I'll be using to come out, and there's no way in my right mind I'm trying to run Motion 2 under Rosetta.

Since I'm writing this on the newest addition to my family though, I figured I'd post a few thoughts about the machine, while trying not to rehash too much of what John Gruber has already mused over at length:
  • Aesthetically, the machine is fantastic. I've owned one of each size of the aluminum PowerBooks, and this is the best constructed, most devoid of those minor flaws that make you think "it's a quirk but I'll deal with it so I don't have to deal with the snobby jerks at the Apple Store".
  • I can not feel the hard drive running at all, even with the PowerBook sitting right in my lap during startup. I'm not sure if I just got lucky with a quiet machine, but I'd like to chalk this up to improved engineering
  • This higher resolution is an absolute dream. I've always felt 1280 x 854 on a 15"  notebook that's supposed to be aimed at pros was a little on the short side, and 1440 x 960 is floating my boat quite well
  • If energy saving settings turn the display off before the machine goes to sleep, the latch light glows bright and solid. I've never seen this before on a PowerBook, can anyone else confirm this is a feature of the new machines and not just some setting I've missed, or new feature of 10.4.3?
So there, nothing too amazingly new or different about this machine but its recently updated specs. I'll be sure to post anything else I stumble upon like the latch light, but in the meantime: have any of you found new quirks or pleasant surprises like this?

Rolphus: When plugged into AC power, I have my display set to sleep at 30 minutes, and the machine set to sleep in an hour. For that entire half hour the display is asleep, the latch light will glow, solid. I don't think that's a short-term "pre-sleep warning" light. It truly seems as though it's an indicator that the display is asleep, but the machine is still awake and cooking.

The delay in the latch light going on is the "safe sleep" mode kicking in - it takes a few seconds to pull the active contents of RAM onto the disk, and if you're bored enough to read the manual, it explains that you're not supposed to move the powerbook until it starts going into the usual "gently pulsating" thing.

#5 and #6 I also noticed the 15"PB getting rather warm, when charging or on Better performance power settings. Go and have a look at http://www.chillpak.com/ I ordered a couple, and hoping this will help when its sitting on my lap PS: I'm not affiliated with them - or the xfiles ;-P

I'm kinda slightly annoyed as I got a brand new 15" G4 PB as well.. 4 weeks before the higher res/better battery/brighter screen was announced.... The good thing.. Its a lease laptop, so I'll be trading it in for a new iNTEL one come 2006 :)

i did a little review/comparison between the new 15" and older rev B version here.. http://forums.appletalk.com.au/index.php?showtopic=14307 but it doens't (and wasn't meant to) go to the same level of detail as Gruber's review. XBench results were interesting....!?

#5 - powerbooks running hot has been an issue for a long time. my 15" 1.5ghz can get up to around 142 degrees when doing something intense (or just running WMP). the 12" is supposed to get even hotter. its because there is so much power in such a small form factor. thats the price you pay for luxury ;-). any apple store employee (with a brain) will tell you this as well, so its not just some conspiracy theory. so dont worry, its fine. get a heat pad for it if it bothers you too much. or else use it on a hard surface, something that releases heat nicely.

It doesn't happen on my 2004 powerbook but it would be nice if it would. After all im guessing its a software thing? A few times ive hit the power button thinking it was off when the display was asleep. Does it also glow when you decrease the brightness of the display to zilch using the F1 and F2 buttons?
