First impressions: Macbook Pro
After
waiting patiently in line for twenty minutes, Dan at The Apple Blog got his turn to play with the Macbook Pro
(MBP). There were other members of the press waiting for their turns, so he wasn't able to conduct a complete
review, but he did get a good feel for the machine. A few quotes from his first look:"...the Intel build of Safari is the fastest web browser that I have ever used, on any platform. Instead of bouncing in the dock and forcing you to wait, Safari opens a new window and loads a page almost instantly when you open it..."
"..I went to the Applications folders, selected all, and double clicked...the MBP started working smoothly...clicking around between applications produced instant results..." That's with every application open? Wow.
He identifies the lack of a Firewire 800 port and a PCMCIA slot as the bad news, but his overall (albeit brief) impression of the machine was quite positive. Check it out.

Man -- That name just sucks. So what's the iBook going to be... the "MacBook lite"?
Even "Power MacBook" sounds better than MacBook Pro.

Nah. Just MacBook.
I noted the screen is slightly smaller in vertical pixels, modem & FW800 gone.
FW800 I could understand (though pros certainly use it) but why drop the dial-up modem? Who likes dongles to pay $50 for a $5 industry standard part they left out? :-/ Free Wifi everywhere and broadband everywhere is not a given in most places. Wherever you go family (parents, grandparents?), average hotels, ... you have to fall back on dial-up. There is one WiFi place here at a restaurant. Just outside of town here nobody has broadband. If I drive an hour plus you are lucky if you can use your cellphone. One place I fequent the only thing there is a landline. Forget cellphone, wifi, cable tv, dsl, radio stations, over the air tv.
For people who give presentations or hook it up to their home theater, I learned here, there is no video out.

Why isn't anbody mentioning the instantly lack of Doule Layer DVD burning in this machine that Apple has labeled al 'Pro'..? Heck, the latest PowerBook does have this feature and now we're going BACK instead of forward with this MacBook Pro..!

So has anyone reviewed the iMac yet? I've seen lots on the MacBook, but nothing for the Intel iMac (that's what I want to get).

There is video out, but no separate connector for it. You need a DVI->S-video adapter (just like on the 12" PB).

Also, seems there is currently no DL burner available that is thin enough for the new enclosure.
