MacBook Pro, Powerbook boot race

What would you expect to happen if you but a brand new MacBook Pro next to a 1Ghz Titanium Powerbook and booted them up at the same time? Yeah, the MacBook would boot faster, however, you no longer have to take this on faith because Rich J. Lee has taken the time to do just that, and he filmed it.

The MacBook Pro (I'm getting tired of typing that whole name out already) boots in 27 seconds whilst the TiBook takes 57 seconds.

Please note the dark translucent keyboard on the PowerBook G4. Not the fastest. That model is at least 3 years old.

57 Seconds to boot a 1 gig TiBook?

My 12 inch iBook boots up faster than that. Something is askew here.

Lol. My trusty old iMac G4 15" 800Mhz boots up in 27 seconds. Every time.

I got mine, I got mine! The day of the keynote, I ran down to the local Apple Store to put my name on their list to hold one for me. They called me today and said they had one! 2.0 GHz, baby. I ran down and bought it, even after I had told myself I wouldn't until I knew that the battery life was going to be acceptable (i.e., more than 3 hours under normal usage) but I must have been lying to myself because I whipped out the plastic and charged it before I could stop myself.

I just don't get it with these booting contests. My 'desklamp' iMac 800mhz boots in 26 seconds. I simply can't believe how long some of the boot times I've read are. Are you sure you're comparing like with like - a 'clean' new machine without any extra's installed is likely to thrash a machine with 1000 extensions (or whatever they are called in OS X) isn't it?

In remembrance of IBM PowerPC

The first thought that popped my mind when Steve was talking about Intel Based Macs was IBM: intel based macs. Coincedence? That's probably going around as a joke at Apple's.

Good point, Goobimama. Also, I'd like to see them as similar as possible--brand new, fresh installs of each OS, all software updates run, a few reboots, and nothing else. For all we know, the PB is some 2-year-old crufted-out system running 10.4.1.

Ralph--syllables aren't all that matter. "powerbook" flows nicely off the tongue, but "maC BooK Pro" is three clunky, distinct words due to the hard 'k' sound at the end of the first two words and the equally hard 'p' and 'b' at the beginning of the last two words. Pronunciation-wise, it's as bad of a name as they possibly could have created.
