MacBook Pro vs PowerBook benchmarks

If you are like me and enjoy a good clean fight, check out these benchmarks at Geek Patrol using their own pre-production software: Geekbench, a multi-platform benchmarking utility. These numbers reflect benchmarking on a 1.5GHz PowerBook G4 with 1.25GB RAM vs a 2.0GHz MacBook Pro with 1GB RAM (the latter benchmark running as a Universal Binary not in Rosetta).

I took it upon myself to average their twenty benchmark results. Using Geek Patrol's benchmarking results, the MacBook Pro they used is 3.74 times faster than the PowerBook they tested. If I throw out the low results they received from Stdlib Allocate (which they note: "depends more on library performance than raw hardware performance"), the MacBook Pro is on average, 4.26 times faster than a PowerBook.

We all know that real world testing is what will really determine whether or not the MacBook Pro can severely outperform the PowerBook, but we will have to wait for more pro apps to be released as Universal Binaries before anyone takes a crack at graphing those statistics. Until then, all of you who have a MacBook Pro, enjoy your zippy new laptop.

I got mine last night, and I've got to say, Rosetta is absolutely amazing. I've seen one wait cursor in a few hours with PS. It's truly instantaneous.

What about running a G4 vs. MacBook Pro under Rosetta? That's what I'd be most curious about

For example, running Photoshop on both
How much faster is the G4? or vice versa

Got my 2.0GHz MBP with 2GB RAM yesterday (thank you, FedEx man!). The only other Mac I've used is a G5 iMac, and this definitely is snappier than that was. Lovin' it so far. My first priority as a new Mac owner? Downloading Trent Reznor's GarageBand files off of NIN.com. GarageBand rules!

Pretty incredible speedup, definitely shows us why they moved to Intel processors! Definitely looking forward to seeing what they do with the PowerMacs.

would like to see them use the 1.67Mhz G4 up against the Duo. Might not make too much of a difference, but at least use the last rev of the PowerBook.

Whether the MacBook Pro is 2 or 5 times faster, what does this translate into the actual user experience, nano seconds or minutes saved over a typical use, say 2 hours of pounding the keys? Xiexie, Dashan
