Apple introduces 17-inch MacBook Pro

At least the Apple Store wasn't down this time for too long: today, Apple introduced the 17" MacBook Pro with an Intel Core Duo processor. It's lost .1 lb, now weighing a mere 6.8 lb, and also features a built-in iSight, Front Row and MagSafe - just like its 15" little brother.

The new 17" MacBook Pro comes with a 2.16 Intel Core Duo processor, a 667 MHz front-side bus, a 36% brighter display, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, a 120 GB 5400-rpm SATA drive (standard), a 256 MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 card and - get this: an 8x double-layer SuperDrive, one FireWire 400, one FireWire 800, and three USB 2.0 ports. I guess they had some extra room to work with in the 17" to fit in those extra features that the 15" MacBook Pro lost.

The 17" MacBook Pro sells for $2799 and will begin shipping next week.

One trackpad button?

;-(

Come-on Apple you've been building in Contextual Menus for years, I thought even the shoddy "Mighty" mouse was an admission that more buttons in the hands of a semi intelligent life form could lead to quicker working.

I use the 17 inch Powerbook right now, and love it, although it is too big since I have an iMac at home and a G5 at work, so I won't be getting one. But oh, the stats -- big hard drive, ability to work in Windows, speed, apparently nice battery life. I am tempted...

#19, that's because the 15" MBP uses the new ultra-slim Superdrive form factor (which is not yet available in slot-loading configuration with 8x or DL functionality) while the 17" MBP uses the usual slim Superdrive form factor (also used in the PowerBooks, iMacs and Mac mini's)

Note that the slot is placed lower on the front of the 15' MBP than it is on the 17" MBP, yet both machines ar 1" thin.

#11-

Yeah, maybe there's something I missed, but the cost to get the 2.16GHz processor on the 15-inch is $300, which is the difference between the cost of the 17" and the 15" - yet you get a bigger display, more USB ports, faster drive, etc.
Unless you need something compact, it seriously would be dumb to buy the 15" if you don't need the portability.

That's Awesome. My friend bought a decked-out MBP on Friday for about the same price of the new 17"

He's not sure if he is going to return it and get the 17" or stick with the 15".

This is just a crazy guess, but what if they were to replace the 12" powerbook with a tablet... I mean otherwise wouldn't it have made sense to release the 17 and 12 together? maybe thats a shot in the dark.

Well, the physical placement of the drive slot is higher for the 17", so they either went with a different manufacturer or re-engineered the innards to accomodate the faster drive.
