MacBook Pro gets speed bump, glossy display
Not to be outdone by its younger brother, the MacBook Pro received an update today as well. Specifically, the 2.0GHz model has been replaced by a 2.16GHz version (at $2499US), and the 1.83GHz model now sports an 2.0GHz Intel processor (at $1999US). Also, both MacBook Pro models now feature the new "glossy" display that was introduced (minutes ago) with the MacBook.Such a busy day in Mac Land.

The MacBook Pro has an *option* for the glossy display. The MacBook does not.

"Why is the MacBook Pro pictured in the article?"
Yes this literalism is so 2002.

on a glossy note, did you guys check out the quicktime vr of the blackbook (haha...blackbook :)), it looks like it's a matte finish, and not glossy. i could be mistaken, though.

This will mark the fourth time (out of four) that I buy a Mac and see the specs change within a week of my purchase. I bought the "Ultimate" MacBook Pro, which (at the time) was $2899, and had it delivered the day that the 17 was released (same specs but $100 cheaper), and now seeing that the price of the "Ultimate" has dropped $300. *shrug* such is life. Something better will always come out, I know this, but it's still depressing...

also, i should state that i shoul've put this comment in the macbook post. oops. anyway, it's still kinda relevant, because if the blackBook is matte, then it's just like the mbp's.

So I ordered a MacBook Pro yesterday having sold my PowerBook on eBay. I've frantically cancelled that order. Now I find cos I paid by debit card it'll take 5 days to refund my money from that order before I can order a new one. Grrrrr.

Let me be the first to say that while this and the MacBook are all cool and exciting, those glossy screen are the STUPIDEST thing in portable computing. They have hideous glare and show debris and fingerprints very easily. Apple had been the lone holdout against this stupid trend, but it looks like they're caving in. *sigh*

The Intel era is going to mean a new way of announcing upgrades for Macs. Apple can no longer say that it's an Apples to oranges comparison between them and PCs. I think that as faster processors are announced by Intel and adopted by other PC makers, Apple is going to adopt them too.
Since everybody's on the same page with processors, Apple can't even attempt to boast about speed if they're using a processor that's clearly slower.
The days of twice a year upgrades are gone for now. You can fully expect your new Mac to be outdone by a faster one even sooner these days.

SwissFreek,
The last time this happened to me I called up apple and they credited the difference back to my credit card. I would suggest calling them to see if they can do the same for you. Good luck!

Agree 100%. Glossy screens = teh suck. I use my laptop outside all the time, and thank god for the antiglare screen. If I had a glossy one, I may as well be looking in a mirror.
I hate glossy screens on monitors and televisions, too. Why would I want one on a laptop, which, being portable and all, is more likely to come into contact with glare?

I'm with Christian - I sell laptops all day long, the 'glossy' / glass / diamond screen is really bad for thee eyes!
dust, fingerprints and general glare if you even for one second try and use it on a train, bus (anywhere near a window).
I won't be grabbing a MacBook until there's an option to take the trendy-ness away. Oh, and I'll be buying one in WHITE!. hah

My 15.4" 2.0GHz MBP was shipped earlier today, so even before it arrives it's obsolete due to a faster, cheaper 2.16GHz version
Have I got any options here? Can I send it back and ask them to send me the faster, cheaper version?

SwissFreek;
I ordered on Friday, so my new MacBook is somewhere between Shanghai and the UK... talked to the Apple Store today - they said once I had it to give them a call and we could discuss a) returning it (with shipping charge, of course) or b) a refund of the price difference. So all it not lost!
Cheers,
James
