MacBook Pro gets speed bump, glossy display

Not to be outdone by its younger brother, the MacBook Pro received an update today as well. Specifically, the 2.0GHz model has been replaced by a 2.16GHz version (at $2499US), and the 1.83GHz model now sports an 2.0GHz Intel processor (at $1999US). Also, both MacBook Pro models now feature the new "glossy" display that was introduced (minutes ago) with the MacBook.

Such a busy day in Mac Land.

I orderd a 1.83 MBP on Saturday around 11:30pm (PST). Tuesday after they made the change, I got an email from apple stating that "Apple is pleased to announce increased processor speeds on both models of the
15-inch MacBook Pro, delivering even greater performance at no additional
cost. Because your order has not yet shipped, we will automatically send you a
15-inch 2.0GHz MacBook Pro at no additional charge.
" So basically, they are just NOW shipping me the 2.0MBP. I am glad I orderd online and did not purchase in store. If I would have ended up with the 1.83 I doubt they would have switched it for me. I am happy to get the 2.0

James--- They shipped yours out without changing the specs??

I ordered my 1.83, decked out, on Friday. It'll be here on the 25th. And as someone else said...it REALLY sucks that it's and obsolete model even before it gets here. Seriously though....BAH.

To comfort those hit by the small speedbump and price change, which I think we will see more frequently now that Apple uses Intel.

I bought a Hi-Res PB two weeks before the MBPs were announced. That's not a .17Ghz and $100-$200 difference. They're a whole class apart. PB G4 vs Core Duo, iSight, Remote, iLife06, MagSafe, ... Couldn't return it as it was BTO / CTO with a larger 7200rpm HDD.

Well, Amanda, they might charge you an open-box fee, unless you didn't run it or damage the packaging. If anything it could be worse, like buying a G4 Pb right before the MBP worse (well, depending on your architecture prefs...)

I got my MBP a while back and don't mind the bump in speed, since, even with the bump, the low end still has half the ram for both the system and the video, and a smaller HDD.

I agree with the glossy screen comments, though I wonder how different these are if it's a free option. Either it's just to get rid of stock, or it's a treatment that easily applied. (well, it could be to satiate those that hate glossy screens) In any case, I like the matte more for visibility, though I always admired the strong and solid black/darker colors on the VAIOs, the high gloss is just asking for obstructive views. I'm happy with the brightness, moreso, and the colors are fine as they are.

TicTac,

Depending on whom you purchased it from, chances are very likely that you'll be able to do one of two things: 1. Return it immediately, without opening it, for a refund, which you can apply towards the current model and pricing, or 2. Get refunded the difference between the current pricing and what you paid for your configuration.

I personally bought my 1.83GHz MBP from Amazon less than a month ago, so I'm going to have them refund the $100 difference between the two, plus I have a $150 mail in rebate from Amazon, so it appears my MBP will run my $1749 with no tax or shipping. Not too bad :-)

Amanda, I think you can complain where you bought it.
You can ask your money back.

According to a conversation I just had with an Apple UK Sales Support person (in Ireland) they will take back my 2.0GHz MBP (shipped earlier today) when it arrives and replace it with a 2.16GHz MBP....but there will be a £50 're-stocking' fee

Mine was a Web Order from the Apple Education Store site

Not sure if the .16Ghz difference is worth the hassle to be honest and of course I'll be into another wait for my new 2.16GHz MBP....

But maybe the 2.16Ghz versions have had all the whining problems sorted on them????
