MacBook Pro heating problems fixed?
When Apple released the SMC Firmware update for Intel Macs this past Tuesday, they were rather cryptic about just what it was supposed to do. One conspiracy theory proposed that it was intended to cripple clock speeds, but Information Week is reporting something quite different (and less insidious): It seems that MacBook Pro (MBP) heating issues have been resolved. According to the article, MBP users are finding that their fans are running more effectively, resulting in post-update temperatures as low as 8 degrees cooler. What all this means is no more burnt thighs during lengthy World of Warcraft sessions. So, TUAWers, what has your experience been? Has this firmware update put your MBP into the deep freeze?

I am running Windows XP on my MBP. It gets pretty hot, much higher than what is advertized (32 C), and Apple does not offer any unility to optimize the power (e.g., optimize the clock speed) like IBM TP does. Any idea what I could do to minimize the heat?

Forget base pads with fans, etc. (expensive; people say they tend to break); forget tripods or other (non-fan) bases (bought the 3M for $4, nice angle but no heat relief). No, go find the Kensington USB facial fan on a flexible aluminum neck, about $8 (or the equivalent). Not worth a damn running in your face, but bend it underneath the MacBook's left side and it feels as if the A/C's OFF. Haven't measured, thermometer-wise, but it seems to do the trick. Completely cool, no noise, and USB powered.

Completely, and (blessed!) silently. $8!!!!

June 23 2006 at 10:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhello everyone, i would like to take this time to state that the firm ware update doesn't help much. i use to run 83-98c with 34cpu usage now because of the update its about 76-85c with the same amount of cpu usage. i have to say i was waiting for this apple for as long as i heard they were putting and intel processor in it. now i'm sad to say i'm really disapointed at apple. thank you everyone for ur time.
June 13 2006 at 12:44 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have a MacPro 2ghz and noticed the fans are running more after the update. Is there any info available on which serial numbers or lot numbers were found to have issues with too much thermal paste?
May 22 2006 at 2:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI see a lot of conflicting reports on the results of this new firmware. Some users say its helped others say its worse, and some say no change at all. Wondering if those people posting results can also include their MBP series number. Maybe the firmware update affects certain runs differently. Just a thought...
May 20 2006 at 8:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI noticed some wireless improvements, every time I needed to connect to my router I had to restart it because if not I get a weird ip adress.
#12 For kernel dan, if you read the update's instructions, you'll notice that it says that it's completeley normal that the fans go as fast as you said
I was a bit of a doubting thomas before I installed the firmware update, but the results have made me happy.
Before the update my MBP2.0 would run at 75-85 deg C under my normal use. Now it runs at 60-70 deg C. Now I have longer before I burn my lap!
