It's official: No 12" MacBook Pro

Dave Chartier was wondering if Apple would produce a 12" MacBook Pro to replace the 12" Powerbook. Today, Julio at Your Tech Weblog sets the record straight. He writes:

"...[Apple] just told me on the telephone that a 12-inch MacBook Pro ain't gonna happen."

Fair well, tiny Powerbook. See you on Ebay.

If I could put my Powerbook 12" (most recent revision) on eBay and get anything like the price of a Macbook, I would do it without a doubt. The power of a G4 doesn't compare to an Intel Duo 1.8GHz. Nowhere near. I'll admit the size issue is a bit annoying, but the brighter, wide higher-res screen more than makes up for that (for me).

I want a MacBook!

It's "official" because another blog said Apple told the author over the phone that the 12-inch MBP wouldn't be released? OK, if you say so, but I'm far but convinced.

If they made the black version of the MacBook with a discrete GPU, I think that would make it seem a bit more worthy of replacing the 12 pBook; but no, apple had to give it shared graphics and charge a $150 premium.

I love my 12" PB and it goes most everywhere with me. I do not need 1900 x 1200 for travelling and the screen is just fine for what it is used for. Having said that I have no need to upgrade it either because I do not run anything on it which requires a CPU or GPU upgrade.

I woudl be tempted if they could bring out a MBP in 12" with the same slimmer form factor of the bigger machines but I just don't think it would be possible at the moment given the heat issues and additional hardware in the MBPs.

I ain't disagreeing with you, G4's are slow and 1024 is not cool. But I do hold some hope for a MacBook

G4s are slow and a 1024x768 4:3 LCD just doesn't cut it anymore. Macbooks are much better. Now a MBP in a macbook form w/ good graphics chip and aluminum case is what I want!

Poking about the internets clearly shows a sizeable cadre of us — all of the current 12″ PB users, basically — that are highly pissed about the apparent loss of their small bite of Apple’s pie. Unsurprisingly, like most Apple loyalists, we are rabidly devoted to our Apples, and for every one of us that bought the 12″, It’s the Portability, Stupid!!!!, certainly NOT the vast screen real estate. The more time that passes, and the more other products they introduce, the more left out we feel — Kicked to the iDoor. If indeed “Something Is Coming,” from strictly a business standpoint they had better give us 12ers at least some tiny morsel of hope. After all, it IS easy to argue that we’re Steve’s most active, mobile, and visible ambassadors, dominating every coffeehouse outside of Redmond. So, O Holy Steve, just a little info leak about a new ultraportable, that’s all I ask. Even a tacky Origami-like Mystery Website, whatever. Otherwise, they’ll be inciting the entire 12er posse to start considering how best we might achieve OSX on a VAIO. And while I’m kevetching, I KNOW someone in Cupertino MUST read the many Mac forums, so WHY in the compugods’ names wouldn’t they backlight ALL their keyboards from now to eternity? (Here I sit at 3AM, once again sleepless and having to use my damn Itty Bitty Book Light to light my fingers’ way,)
Oh! And WHO told them to “fix” the current PB keyboards anyway?!? Did any of you tell them they needed redesigning? I know it wasn’t me. I absolutely adore this keyboard. I know they want to push the image envelope at all times, but this keyboard is already perfect! It is simply the finest notebook keyboard that god ever made. My fingers fly over it so fast, sometimes my brain can’t even keep up. PLEASE, O Holy Steve, Hear Our Humble Prayers! Do not leave us, your most active, mobile, and VISIBLE customers out in the cold!!

TUAW: I realize Sunday is a slow news day, but please stop posting this garbage. "It's official" indeed. Come on, you used to be better than this.

Um, Apple has NEVER denied something was coming out and there it is - months or a little while later ... can anyone says VIDEO IPOD or better yet, INTEL MAC ...

Yes, as of today, there is no Intel 12" Mac - will there be one tomorrow, probably not - next january? Would you bet your life against it?

And yes, the MARKETING BLURB says "NOW COMPLETE."

It's only a lie if it's NOT true today.

It is true today. Will it be true forever?

How about

THE MAC FAMILY - NOW EVEN MORE COMPLETE.

Or maybe the 12" will be replaced by an 8" ipod - but there's an add-on to make it a Mac Mini portable ...

So, don't be so quick to give up.

It wouldn't hurt if you love the 12" form to send Apple an email (at the bottom of Apple.com is the CONTACT US pages).

And keep in mind, if it's coming out tomorrow, would Apple employees, Apple phone support or Steve Jobs tell you today?
