White MacBooks Turning Yellow
When TUAW reader Rich sent us this link pointing to an Apple Discussions page discussing the tendency for some of the plastics on the new white MacBooks to turn yellowish after just a few weeks, I initially dismissed it as one or two overly-sensitive Mac users complaining about the inevitable hand grease, dirt, and muck that all of our laptops experience during their average use. At least that's what I thought until I saw the pictures [2] [3] [4] [slideshow] and started reading the many posts from many users experiencing the same problem. This discoloration is not dirt and cannot be cleaned by anything that people have tried, and the list is extensive: iKlear and similar cleaners, hot water, Windex, diluted bleach, a Magic Eraser...the list is long.
There definitely appears to be a problem here with the plastic that Apple has used for the palm rests on the first-generation white MacBooks. I have not seen this yet personally (I've yet to even see a MacBook in person), but the numbers and anecdotal evidence is looking pretty convincing. Now, I wonder if Apple will acknowledge the problem and replace the plastics, or whether they'll pass this off as "cosmetic damage" as they've done in the past (cracking lines on the G4 Cube, anyone?).

I was browsing Ebay, looking for an iSkin for my mothers PowerBook and I feel like I saw a skin for the new Macbook that the silicone goes down over the palm rests. And now I cant find it for ANYTHING! Anyone know anything about the skin? or is it all in my head?

August 15 2006 at 4:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI am new to Mac and I just recently purchased the Mac Book (White). I've only had it for like 3 weeks and it is starting to turn slightly yellow at the palm rests. I can guarantee that my hands are clean as I tend to wash my hands quite a bit. I also do not put an oils or lotions on my hands. I called Apple about it and they told me that they are looking into the problem and gave me the option of getting my money back or having the case replaced. I plan on getting the case replaced but I don't see this not happening again. If I could, I would have bought the black one. I just don't feel like going through the process of returning it only to purchase a black one.

July 09 2006 at 3:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had this on a DELL Latitude D600, on the palm rests. i thoguth it was to do with my skin or somthing. when they changed the plastic (for an unrealtted touchpad problme) the problem has never reoccured. They must have changed the plastic, or it was a dud peice to start with

I am going crazy whether to go with the book or pro. I am a physician will probably use it surfing the net, word processing, movies. photo editing, movie editing from ilife only. may be use it to view some images from the hospital if i can.
I have read some blogs claiming that macbook is sufficient for all this provided i bump up the Ram to 2Gb
Have the macbook for three weeks now, no stains whatsoever... Untill yesterday a friend who wrote something on his hand made a huge stain on my beautiful new computer...
after trying lots of cleaning products, aceton-free nailpolish remover appeared to work perfectly!
So now I feel obliged to let people know this works. Maybe it'll work on the yellow stains as well.
It's rather simple why the macbooks are turning yellow.
All white plastics turn after use, time, etc.
I would never buy an all white plastic anything not for that fact, but I don't like white.
The way the Macbooks are turning yellow is due to the same chemistry as men's shirts. It's called "ring around the collar". There is a whole chemistry on this.
Plastics shouldn't turn like that, but who knows. Heat/sweating palms/hours of use/ white/bacteria/hours of use/plastic?/heat/etc.
I guess the Macbooks have a ring around the collar also.
Whenever I use a notebook, no matter how good the trackpad is (and on the macbook it's great) i like to use a mouse.

It is NO normal or expected that a MacBook turns that DAMAGED after 1 or 2 weeks of normal usage. Most of us are clean people who wash their hands often (otherwise, would we care how filthy our Macs looked!!!?)
the website is http://www.stainedBook.info - please come and sign up if you are affected
