MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.0

Attention MacBook owners: fire up Software Update to get the latest MacBook SMC Firmware Update. From the updater: 'The SMC Firmware Update adjusts fan behavior in the MacBook. The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder. Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the process.'

Could this spell the end of the Mooing MacBooks? Only time can tell.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

I was lucky enough to send my MacBook in for repairs and get it back in only 4 days including shipping. Random shutdowns were gone and all was great...but now with the FirmWare update my fan goes into hurricane mode everytime some process gets CPU intensive, including a Safari webpage that must have some lousy script spinning icons. While I appreciate it if this prevents the shutdowns I think Apple may have gone to extremes to correct the overheating problem. De-icing next in line for my poor MacBook? :)

I installed the update recently (within in the past week or so) and ever since, my 2.0 ghz macbook has been shutting off randomly...so far, nothing i've done has eliminated the shutdowns
gonna take it to the nearest apple store to see what they have to say about it :(

The constant whirring of the fans is driving me demented! I enjoyed the peace and quiet I had before the update!!!!

No more burning left thigh! I've had the update for a couple of days now and it's definitely improved my world.

I have one of the first black MacBooks that was delivered to my local Apple Store. I have never had any mooing or any other problems. After installing the update my machine now purrs constantly. I'm guessing that it's just the fan running, but it never made this sound before. It's quite annoying :-(

I'm running at 2.0GHz White MacBook and I've had definitely heard the mooing. I was always idling at 70 degrees C but now it seems to be idling at about 64. I'd say that's an improvement and NO more mooooooing, so far! I don't think it feels much cooler but the CPU temp is definitely down and NO more mooooooing, YAY!

"But I wonder, why didn't Apple work on stuff like this before sending these out to the public?"

I think there's a difference between too hot for design specification and too hot for skin safety or just too hot for comfort and peace of mind. So at testing the heat is within design specification on the large majority of tested machines; it's not so hot it will harm the components. The decision is made that if it works it works, but you'll never know until a huge number of people rush out and buy one in the first week and then en masse hate the heat.

Somebody mentioned battery life with the fan always on. And also that the fan always on wasn't an improvement. Last things first, my MacBook was never "too hot", but it's still much cooler and I'll still take much cooler with the fan on all the time over very warm with intermittent fan.

As for battery life, don't electronic components running hot use more power to do the same tasks, over running at lower temperatures? And don't lithium ion batteries charging or running in hot temperatures store and use charge less efficiently? So the battery life effect could be about a wash. It could even improve battery life. Or I could be an idiot.

So, after running the update, my fan seems to be going almost constantly, whereas beforehand, I never noticed my fan. I guess it's good if it's keeping the computer cooler, maybe, but hadn't really had any heat problems either. So, it seems that now I simply have a substantially noisier Macbook.

Bummer!
