BREAKING NEWS: Apple recalls 1.1 million batteries
CNN is reporting Apple, who, like Dell, relies on Sony-manufactured batteries, is jumping on the recall wagon and recalling a whopping 1.1 million of the fire-prone beasties. There's no link yet on CNN's site, but here's the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's page on the matter. Just when you think Sony couldn't get any worse... And weren't we all so smug when we heard about Dell's misfortune?UPDATE: This covers G4-based iBooks and PowerBooks only at this point.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in, although I happened upon it at CNN first]

I bought a replacement battery for my Dell laptop about a month ago from http://www.laptopsforless.com/laptopbattery and it works great. Is there any reason to think that a replacement laptop battery would be any worse than the manufacturers? Mine was not covered by the recall so that's why I didn't send it in in the first place.

August 26 2006 at 5:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLast night the web site rejected my PowerBook's serial number and battery serial number, accepted the iBook's serial number, but not it's battery's. Today both computer serial numbers are accepted but the battery serial numbers are still getting rejected. How hard is it to create a database query that matches the range of serial numbers rather than this flakey behaviour? I'm guessing they're doing database lookups on the full serial numbers and the high loads are causing query timeouts. They should just do a pattern match on the prefix, accept the order, and verify the full serial number offline! That would reduce the load on the servers from the repeated attempts and the overload on the phone banks as well.
yup! a1079 inside the range serials here :(

My battery was within the range of recalled batteries, yet it showed up as an invalid serial number or outside the range of affected batteries. Called AppleCare, which was swamped with calls, and the rep entered in a "secret" code to allow me to get my battery replaced. Can't wait to have a nice new battery for my iBook!

I hardly doubt that an Apple Store would have enough replacement batteries readily available to exchange for the thousands upon thousands of PowerBook owners that this is going to affect. You probably could have used one of the store computers to place the order.
I just put through the order to replace mine. It came at a good time because my battery was having difficulty holding a charge for some reason. ^_^
My battery serial number was rejected all evening yesterday but was finally accepted around 10 PM Central. Apple probably needed everyone they could find to answer phones yesterday...
I have doubts that my battery is in danger of blowing up (I'm not risking it, though), but I'm happy to get a new one. I dropped my 12" PB a couple of months ago and dented the aluminum casing on the battery which has made the machine a little wobbly on my desk. This new battery should clear that up :-)
I'm finally able to convince the apple system that I do in fact qualify for the exchange - but it insists that there is a city/state/zip mismatch when I enter my info. Is anyone else having this problem???? I can't seem to get thru to a human to explain

August 25 2006 at 2:11 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTwo of my machines have defective batteries with serial numbers in the range of bad ones, and matching model numbers, however the web site to order replacements is rejecting the serial numbers. sigh. I'll have to call the toll free number and see if they can do something about it. Should be a lot of fun (not) trying to get through to a human.
