Rig of the Day: Guitar on the wall

Judging from our Rig of the Day pool, MacBooks are very popular (in fact, I'm typing this on one). Anyway, continuing our theme of simple, I give you a rig that seems to be made for watching movies. The LG flat screen monitor hooked up to a MacBook running Front Row warms the cockles of my heart. The desk is even sporting a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. And is that an Apple sticker I spy on that guitar?

If you'd like to see your own rig featured here, simply upload photos into our group Flickr pool. We select one image to highlight each week day, and crown a Rig of the Week on Sundays.

How often do you have to change the batteries on a bluetooth mouse and keyboard? Do they come with a recharging dock? Or can they be charged by USB?

I wouldn't use bluetooth mouse and keyboard for mere desk use because of that, but if I was surfing from the bed our couch I would.

#7: Running MacBook with lid closed is easy.

If you external monitor is hooked up, just power on and close the lid.

Or, if it's already on and the monitor isn't connected yet, just close the lid (sleep mode kicks in), plug in the monitor and hit a key on the keyboard ;-)

#9 and #7, always a good idea to read the docs that come with your machine.
you have to plug the power adaptor in, else they sleep.

#1, i write with my left hand, yet can only draw with my right but paint with both, i use my right for a mouse and box southpaw (left handed) i play football (soccer) with my left foot yet i bowl with my right hand, i play harmonica leading with my left hand, use the phone in my right but text with my left.

some people just are like that, i use different hands and feet for different things, i can actually right with one hand and draw with the other and both will look as neat and good as if i was doing one at a time. So that hopefully answers your question :)

Wow thanks! Glad you all like my setup.

To answer a couple of questions.. yes, I'm left handed but I learned to use a mouse right handed mainly because all the computers in school when I was a kid had them set up like that. It feels weird to use it left handed now.

As for the lid-closed mode, I wrote a blog entry about this exact thing.. here you go: http://www.j4mie.org/2006/06/21/macbook-can-work-in-lid-closed-mode-without-a-mouse-and-keyboard/

The best thing about this setup is the fact that the TV is at a low enough resolution (1360x768) on such a big screen that I can comfortably read text on it from across the room. I'm currently sitting on my sofa with the bluetooth keyboard on my lap and the mouse to my side. You lot are all on the TV!

I'm a left handed guitar player, right handed mouse user. Being left handed and using a mouse right handed is a pretty simple task to learn but play guitar right handed isn't so.

Though for some reason I can't use a right handed joystick.

Nice set up.

heya, nice setup. the point that interest me is how he got it to work to use frontrow on the external display? any hack or just mirror mode with same resolution as on the macbook? would be nice to know, thanks a lot =)

How can you use the closed lid mode on a Macbook? I tried it before, but failed utterly.

Isn't there a risk of damaging the screen?

Does it involve programs like sleepless that keep your Mac awake after closing the lid, or can it be done out of the box?

1. Powerbook G4 667 with broken screen
2. Shitty old Dell 15" monitor
3. Dodgy 80s Fender Strat replica with retro multi-colour Apple sticker...
4. Cheap arse 6-year-old Altec Lansing speakers and stupidly massive subwoofer (which the PB is sitting on)

thats a badass setup, much better than my macbook pro on my lap.

my question is why the budget macbook and speakers! he's got the japanese tele (sound awesome), a nice amp, awesome tv/monitor. the ipod hi fi and the low end macbook confuse me. if you're spending that much dough to begin with you might as well go all out. but thats just me.
