Apple issues one-liner support doc on random MacBook shutdown problem
Apple seems to be *so* happy to finally fess up that this MacBook RSS (Random Shutdown Syndrome) isn't just all in our heads. xlr8yourmac tracked down a new Apple Knowledgebase article that is another amusing one-liner from Apple's support crew: "If your MacBook is shutting down intermittently, please contact AppleCare for service." A little bird told us they finally know what's going on and have a fix for the issue, but don't quote us on that.If you are an unfortunate MacBook RSS victim and you do give AppleCare a call, feel free to comment here with your experience and how Apple is treating this issue. We honestly don't know much more about it aside from this theory, so we're in the dark as much as you are.

I bought my macbook on the first day they came out. It has suffered every known problem...case separation...discoloring...grinding dvd drive..and the random shut downs. I sent it in in July and they repaired the case separation, only to make new problems around the screen. the random shut downs were not solved and the dvd drive still grinds. I sent it in eight days ago again with no questions asked for the remaining problems. The repair status says part on order. I am hoping for a motherboard replacement and to get it back soon.

Is there any reason to think that a replacement Apple AC adapter would be any less reliable than the manufacturers? Is there any risk of fire given all the fire issues that have emerged recently?

It is completely replicable and the genius could even make it occur using an external hard drive. They sent my machine in on August 27, they have a part on order as of August 29, but as of September 12 - it's still "on order"! This is the second time it's been in the shop - first time the cd/dvd drive died (on day 2 no less). I recently switched from Dell to Apple, and it looks like I'll be switching back.

If I took it into an apple store to get this problem fixed would I have to pay any money?
It's not that I'm stingy, it's just that I spent a lot on my macbook and I shouldn't have to pay more money for not having my macbook shut down when i'm in the middle of writing a paper.
Took my Macbook into an apple store on tuesday for the recent batch of random shutdowns. They said they will replace the logicboard and heat sink. I am waiting waiting for them to call me so I can pick it up again. I just switched and am worried about this happening during the school year.

I have dealt with Applecare many times in the past, and it the turnaround time is usually 1 - 2 days. So this instance is very unusual....
As soon as the word went out about the dude from Germany discovering the sensory cable issue and RSS on the Macbooks, I immediately printed out the article (in English, of course) and took a friend's Macbook to the AppleStore. They immediately gave me a new Macbook and transferred all of my data over with hardly a fuss placed.

Apple to recall macbooks monday
mine started doing this 2 months in, sent it out for a week, got a new motherboard, heatsink, bezel, plastics and the problem came back much worse a week later. They refuse to replace it and now I'm on hold waiting for parts. If I get it back and its still broken I'm buying a thinkpad and filing for the price of the machine in my local small claims court.
The idea that apple is going to field a lawyer to a town court is slim to nil, and if they do my local judge will probably rule for me anyway.
