Will we see iTunes 7 tomorrow?

The rumors are swirling, as they always do before his Steveness mounts a stage. Tomorrow, in case you aren't completely Apple obsessed, Apple is hosting a special event titled "Showtime" in San Francisco. The media has been invited, the rumormills are churning, and the Apple faithful are in a tizzy.

We've heard a lot about movies in iTunes, and other rumors, but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the possibility of iTunes 7. Apple launched iTunes 6 almost 11 months ago to the day of this event. Remember what the big feature of iTunes 6 was? That's right, TV shows in the iTunes Music Store.

If I were a betting man I would put money on iTunes 7 making a debut tomorrow. Please note that I have no insider information, I'm just looking at the available facts and building a theory.

So, if this does come to pass what features would you like to see in iTunes 7? I, personally, don't need any whizbang features, I would just like video playback to be improved.

The rumors are swirling, as they always do before his Steveness mounts a stage. Tomorrow, in case you aren't completely Apple obsessed,...

Whoa, talk about a bullseye on 2 out of my 3 requests above - right down to Apple actually purchasing CoverFlow, even the name...

How about making it use Quicktime properly for playing *all* media files, then the OGG Vorbis component should work properly. Currently Windows Media Player is way ahead in this regard.

And being able to sort albums chronologically would be nice too.

Blair:
I believe Jonathan is referring to the browse columns in browse mode, where you can now only have Genre/Artist/Album or Artist/Album. I agree it'd be nice to have more options here.

One thing that bothers me about iTunes is the development being completely behind closed doors. Other players have their own blogs/forums where you can communicate with developers and give feedback that actually affects the next version.

The Airport Extreme is listed as 1-3 week waiting time on the Apple Store, does anyone know if this is recent?

How about improved volume leveling. Seems like this feature doesn't get enough attention and the reason is, it doesn't work very well at all. There are other music players that do a much better job of this.

"6. I would like to see song "ties" not joining two tracks but songs that are 'tied' together.

What does that mean?

Well, let's say a CD you own there are two songs that essentially only make sense if you play them back to back. You can tie them together. They will still be two separate songs so you can save one on a CD without the other if you wish. but if both songs are in the same play list and you randomize the playlist, those two songs will be tied in the order they were originally tied. So, they will stick together when randomized.

I submitted that as a suggestion about 8 months ago, we'll see if anyone listened."

Tomnibus and others> have you ever tried to use the tag "part of a compilation"? when you select this it does exactly what you say, if randomly it gets to any of the songs of the same album and they are checked as compilation, the next song will be the one is after on the album instead of jumping to other song. Actually it will continue to play the whole compilation and after it finishes it will jump to another random song.  This was implemented since iTunes 4 if I can recall correctly

ALBUM ART VIEW
NEW REBRANDED MUSIC STORE
and
A NEW ICON - the itunes icon shows a cd, but i doubt many itunes users frequently use a cd, plus the icon needs a refresh as well.

so many comments, and no response to my mini-essay of s comment? i'm ashamed.

i guess this website is just mac fanboys and fangirls, and none of you realize the evil of fails-to-play DRM.

I would like movies and music to be much more separate in iTunes. At the moment I just use the finder to organize my movies, but it would be nice to have it set up in iTunes and if done well I'd throw all my stuff in there.

Also video playback is bad. Why can't I chose were to skip to in a movie or start at a certain spot? Quicktime does it fine. Move the mouse and you have a transparent bar in the center that you can scroll. I've sent this to Apple before, it just doesn't make sense that they didn't put it in iTunes.
