MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.1

MacBook owners: dust off Software Update and download yourself Apple's latest take on the MacBook SMC Firmware (1.1). This update, 'improves the MacBook's internal monitoring system and addresses issues with unexpected shutdowns. This update is recommended for all MacBook systems, including those that received warranty repair. The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder. Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the process.'
Very interesting that Apple addresses the Random Shutdown Syndrome in the text of the update. Check out the full instructions, and note that you must be running at least OS X 10.4.7 to install this update.

I installed the update and now it wont start anymore.
If I press the power button the dvd-drive will repeatedly make the sratching noise (like with sleep wakeup) Can only stop this by holding the power
button down.
Fine update.
Anyone an idea ?
Rob
I read somewhere that the way this update "addresses" the RSS issue is to throttle down the processor, thereby reducing heat. This is hardly the way I want to go, if true. Also, my MacBook had RSS, was serviced by Apple, and has been fine since, so I am not desperate for a fix since it's not broken anymore.
Can anyone confirm the above rumor one way or another and/or what this update actually does?
Thanks in advance.
my macbook is less than 3 months old... sure this DL is great if it resolves the problem (which i think it has) BUT i expect more from apple... i know everyhting breaks down but i hate to say it; my pc never had these issues...i would be in great dispair if it wasn't for my apple boy. as far as the discoloring on the key board... yeah i almost want to get the black one... should have thought of this sooner... dirt bothers me.

Others seem to have had more problems in that respect...
October 27 2006 at 3:06 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI never had the RSS but what I do have is that my macbook, after some uptime, goes hay-wire. It's not responding except for the mouse which after a while turns in to the busy circle. The whole machine goes in to a rant where the fan is at max an there is nothing i can do but move the cursor.
The worst thing is that after a forced shutdown I can never be sure if the hard drive survived. I've had to reinstall OS X 4 times in 3 month.
Think this update fixes my problem? Anyone?
Still love my macbook though!!
Post #12: When my MacBook came back from the shop with a broken battery, I called Apple support after the 90 day window several times. Don't give them a chance to ask whether you want AppleCare and such, just dive right into complaining about your problem(s). From my experience, acting sufficiently frustrated seems to supersede the 90 day rule. Failing that, I'm sure Apple has some sort of online support option -- your MacBook is under warranty for one year, they have to give you some way of arranging for repairs.
Good luck!

Sorry for the typo. I'm in a hurry.
October 27 2006 at 12:18 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWow that is what i call bad luck. Dude, go for the 299$ plan, anyways the phone support is going to ask you to but it and the plan is pretty good, it covers you up 100%.
October 27 2006 at 12:16 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou guys are lucky, if it actually fixed it ! I received my Macbook the first of July, first thing I open the box and the lcd has a crack in it but can only be seen from a certain angle. I had to go on vacation that afternoon, when I got back 2 weeks later and called Apple about it. Denied ! They told me, "physical problems should be reported within 10 days." So, fine whatever... 6 weeks later, I notice that my cd-rom drive is scratching discs and is very tight. I bring the macbook into the Apple Store in Toronto when I was visiting friends... 1 month later, it's fixed ! They kept it the whole time, I've never had to wait that long for anything in my life. Fine, right... so, I get home and 3 days later I get the Random Shutdowns, something I've never had before. WHAT THE HELL ? I call Apple Care, they tell me "Sorry, you're phone support is no longer active." I ask, "So, what happened with the time that Apple had my macbook in their possession. Do I get any of that time back ?" "No, 90 days phone support is 90 days, no exceptions." SOB ! That sucks. So, now I've either got to pay $60 for the call to the phone support call or pay $299 for a Apple Care Pro Plan.
Anyone have any suggestions ? Honestly, I'm kind of pissed with the whole deal. Thanks,
Richard.
Does this fix the low volume problem?
