Users report problems searching in iTunes 7.1.1

Jason O'Grady of ZDNet posts that thousands of Windows users are having problems with iTunes 7.1.1, which they believe will not allow them to properly search the iTunes store. Their search goes into an endless wait, and then they get a message that their iTunes request could not be completed.

It seems to me that Apple's response, namely that the "network connection timed-out" error is an Internet problem not a software problem, sounds reasonable. When iTunes connects to the store, it's sending out a request for what is essentially a webpage and this request can hang for any number of network reasons--including those on the Apple end.

O'Grady suggests that users may have to uninstall iTunes 7.1.1 and re-install iTunes 7.0, but I'm not sure that is necessary. The original Apple discussion list thread is here.

I just downloaded the Itunes 7.11 on a PC and it doubled my Gigs used. Does anyone know how this happened and how to correct this? Already cleaned up the duplicates.

I downloaded the iTUNES newest version on 4-1-07 it took me two attempts to download. After the second try it finally download but after trying to sync my songs I got a message saying that my IPOD was corrupted and that I needed to restore to factory settings. I was unable to restore my IPOD would not respond I could not even turn it off, the next morning it was off but now it will not come back on.
Now I have to go through the headache of returning it to the store, the amount of money that you pay for these IPODS you would think that they would be more carefull about the type of programs that they use to upgrade.

I have this same problem. I have tried to search for music that I already downloaded from ITunes and the connection times out. But a search for other artists will come right up. This makes no sense. I did a search for "Somewhere over the rainbow" and got hits, but when I search for an artist "IZ", who is listed on the Rainbow search, the connection times out. Again it makes no sense.

Must be they've installed Leopard Server on their iTunes back-end. What better way to test it before release?

The iTunes Store has just been SLOW lately. That's all there is to it. Their media servers appear to be ok, as I was able to download some songs very quickly the other night, confirming that my connection is fine. But then iTunes hung for nearly 10 minutes (!!) at the end of the download, which I believe is when the file is wrapped with DRM information. This is not the way to sell music & movies online, and neither is a feeble excuse for not keeping up with traffic.

I use Windows XP and Norton Anti-Virus, so I tried shutting down some of the settings in Norton. It worked! I turned off "Internet Worm Protection" and "Spyware Protection". Are both necessary to turn off, I don't know and intend to try that the next time I go into iTunes to do a search. Hope this helps some of you.

Yep

I wonder if this has anything to do with Akamai, which Apple uses to deliver content from iTunes.

Mine seems to only hang if I have a typo in the search box. If I type "Alnis Morisette" it times out, but if I type "Alanis Morisette", then I have no problems.
