MacBook price gap shrinks...a little
When the MacBook was first introduced, the difference between a black model and a mid-ranged white one was 20GB of disk space and $200US. Today, you can configure a middle-of-the-road white model to exactly match a top-of-the-line black model, and the difference is $125US. Last May, we asked the poll question: "Will you buy a black MacBook?" and the results were as follows:
- 48% of respondents said "I'm tempted"
- 30% said "No way in heck"
- 22% just can't wait, declaring, "I simply must have it!"

If the MacBook white ($1299 list) is configured with 160Gb HD and 2Gb memory, it totals $1549 (list) - that means an extra Gb of memory for $50, with all other performance the same. Seems like a pretty good deal. The black version probably disapates heat better than the white, but that's about all (I guess).

I grew up on a steady diet of ThinkPads so for me a black laptop is, like, so 1990s.
Plus, if you look around, all the PC laptop OEMs are scrambling to copy the look of the *white* MacBook (e.g. Acer TravelMate 3020, Sony Vaio VGN-N17L, Asus W5000... I mean, look at the Sony and Asus and tell me they do NOT want to be white MacBooks when they grow up:

White is the new black. LOL At least until Steve Jobs comes out with candy-colored MacBooks to match your iPod Shuffle...
I saved the $$$ and went with a white Macbook (stain free btw), however and I do covet the black ones.
My next Mac will be a Macbook Pro or Mac Pro (waiting for Leopard).
If I went for another Macbook, I would probably pony up the extra $$$$ and go for the Blackbook (thanks - leonard).
Of course, I voted "No way in heck" the first time around, only to have my wife run out and buy herself one shortly afterwards...

@11 - the MBP also has a larger screen, a real graphics card, more ports, can drive a 30" screen, higher max RAM, etc.
the book is black, the box, the cable and you iPOd is white.
fair enough.
price difference is still the same in the netherlands... so .. no
May 16 2007 at 4:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm pretty sure this whole post is mistaken. The previous BlackBook was $200 more, but the same model in white was only $150 more. That means that the gap *widened* from $50 to $125.
May 15 2007 at 11:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTypically I don't think I would pay for a color, and the white does look cool. I bought my wife one in January when I switched her from the Dark Side (and despite all the whining and I gotta have Winblows, she's a true convert now and hasn't started up Parallels since the second or third week she had it). Now, I am wrestling with updating my Powerbook, which was top of the line 3 years ago. Today, there is little difference to justify the Macbook Pro, except for the graphics card--and I have a Mac Pro for that. So, in order to differentiate who's is who's, I'm probably going to get a black Macbook just because it's not white like hers.
