MacBook Pro line updated

As surmised among the rumorscenti, this morning's Apple Store outage was the preshow for a MacBook Pro speed bump. The new units ship with either 2.2 GHz or 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) processors, upgraded NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video cards (with either 128 MB or 256 MB of VRAM), new mercury-free LED displays, and a minimum of 2 GB of RAM (yay!) with support for 4 GB (YAY!). The slot-loading optical drive has also been updated to 8x, in line with the MacBook configs. Apple also notes that the 17-inch model "offers a new optional 1920-by-1200 high-resolution display, providing over 30 percent more screen real estate than the standard 1680-by-1050 display." Does it come with a set of magnifying glasses too? The 802.11n version of the Airport Extreme card rounds out the feature package. For a handy spec list, check the end of the Apple press release.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your credit cards... prices start at $1999 for the 15" 2.2 GHz config and go to $2799 for the 17" kit.

Never-mind, just saw the specs. 6 hours battery life!!! that's the same as my MacBook! Man, could you imagine the battery life on a 'MacBook' with an LED screen?

Finally! For the longest time I always felt that the MacBook was a better value and that the MBP didn't have enough of a separation to be worth the extra money. I mean, the metal case and larger screen are nice and all, but for a lot less you get twice as much battery life, lighter and slimmer form and the same CPU. Now, all that's changed and I'm really glad to see Apple changing there ways with it too! 2 GB or RAM is practically unprecedented for Apple! ;) I'm really interested to see if the LED backlighting increases the battery life at all?

Be forewarned - boot camp currently supports neither the graphics card nor the sound configuration of these new "Santa-Rosa" Macs. So, if you intend on doing anything graphically intensive on it, you're out of luck until Apple updates boot camp.

You're not going to need magnifying glasses with Leopard. That's the whole point of resolution independence.

Not enough. Need new enclosure. I want the MacBook keyboard and magnetic latches.

On the bright side, the border around the 15-inch is now even. No thick top border. Hope the 17-inch gets that treatment soon, because I prefer the bigger screen.

What's the battery life on this updated MBP ??
Will it be better for battery life than my MPB 2.16 GHz which can only do 3 hours at most with just 1 or 2 apps running??

I think its about time to add the support for Blue-ray disks instead of the ol'-good-superdrives.

I was ready to buy today, on impulse (I don't really need a new one yet). But to configure the thing with 4GB instead of 2GB costs an additional $750 at the Apple Store. You have to pay for the memory they're going to take out and keep!

Not only is it just not worth it, but it's annoying enough to put me out of the buying mood altogether. I'll wait a few months and see what the next round of updates brings. And if I'm not happy then, I'll wait again.
