MacBook Pro line updated
As surmised among the rumorscenti, this morning's Apple Store outage was the preshow for a MacBook Pro speed bump. The new units ship with either 2.2 GHz or 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) processors, upgraded NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT video cards (with either 128 MB or 256 MB of VRAM), new mercury-free LED displays, and a minimum of 2 GB of RAM (yay!) with support for 4 GB (YAY!). The slot-loading optical drive has also been updated to 8x, in line with the MacBook configs. Apple also notes that the 17-inch model "offers a new optional 1920-by-1200 high-resolution display, providing over 30 percent more screen real estate than the standard 1680-by-1050 display." Does it come with a set of magnifying glasses too? The 802.11n version of the Airport Extreme card rounds out the feature package. For a handy spec list, check the end of the Apple press release.Ladies and gentlemen, start your credit cards... prices start at $1999 for the 15" 2.2 GHz config and go to $2799 for the 17" kit.

Note that the 17 inch'er has a BTO option of 'High-Resolution Widescreen Display [Add $100]' which is a whopping 1920-by-1200. This is the same resolution as a 24-inch iMac, in a 17-inch display!

I've just bought a new one (recon) last week!
Damn, if I'd known, I'd have waited a bit...

Wow, you guys couldn't even mention in your story the two biggest things about this:
* LED displays!!!!
* Santa Rosa chips!!!!

It's new LED displays, not LCD.

Nice indeed!! That's an upgrade... I still miss the DRAFT N wireless to be included from the start... Tech specs don't mention it. I think it's about time Apple says they have N and provides driver.
But the rest seems really great.
Now I think it's time to upgrade other stuff. iMac, iPod, AppleTV... (the first two hardware while the second software).
:-)

I am in the education store. When I price the 15in MBP with the glossy screen, the price drops. Anyone else seeing this?

Nevermind about the glossy screen price. They must have fixed it. I should have gotten screen shots.

@Matteo: They do have N. It says it right on the product description page. And it's enabled from the factory.

My g/f has a 1920 17 inch screen on her Dell...it's really not that bad. It's spectacular for watching HD recordings on too!

@1999ncsu - The glossy price drops to from $1799 to $1664 in the education store when you are configuring your computer, but when you put it in the cart, the price goes back up.
Weird.

The only thing i have been missing since i bought my 20"iMac last November was 1920x1200 resolution. I mean c'mon, it's not like the 20" is a small screen or any. Sure, there is the 24", but it just seemed at the moment simply too big for my table. Oh well, i love my mac so much that it doesn't hurt that much, i'll get the MacPro with the 30" CinemaDisplay next year, so that'll make up for it:D

#9 - The price does go down if you keep the configuration standard. If you add RAM or a larger hard drive, the discount goes away. Screenshots at : http://tinyurl.com/2q6fs5

Jesse; The displays are still LCD, but it is the backlight that has been changed to LED.

I'm impressed, since apple have done two things for the standard configuration they don't normally do:
1. BIG starting RAM :D
2. nice graphics card for a change :D
keep up the good work, apple. i hope this sticks throughout the range. no more Intel GMA950 graphics with a paltry amount of RAM, please!

Anyone noticed that the displays now have "... TFT displays with support for millions of colors ..." - I guess that's a pointer to the recent class action suit ...
