We've seen scorched Macs before, but nothing quite like this. After a devastating fire at their Boulder home last week, Gwen and Paul returned to find their formerly sleek white MacBook decidedly crispier. 
To remove those little icon utility menus in the upper-right corner of your screen, simply hold down the Command (Apple) key and drag the offender out of the menu bar and onto a blank area of the Desktop. Poof! No more icon.

I think it looks rather like the Necronomicon of lovecraft/evil dead/army of darkness fame. It would be amazing if it still worked! I'd love to have a Macronomicon!

My MacBook is on my lap as well -_-
Anyway, I doubt the MacBook was the cause of the fire, as they do not have battery issues (that I've heard of). Also, the MacBook would have been worse off than that. Normally, the laptops that ignite have holes in them, where hot gas exploded from the battery.
...
I just moved my computer off my lap ;)
