Apple announces Leopard server features

Steve said today that there is only one version of Leopard, which isn't technically true. There are, in fact, two versions: client and server. The client version (which is what most people run on their desktops) got all the love at WWDC today, but Leopard server is also shaping up to be very nice.

New to Leopard Server are:
  • a new step up interface (which includes a widget)
  • Podcast Producer: create podcasts and upload them to servers. This takes advantage of Xgrid for heavy lifting (and faster encoding)
  • iCal server: uses CalDAV to create a robust calendaring solution
  • Spotlight Server
  • Xgrid 2
Leopard server will ship in October and cost $499 for a 10 seat license and $999 for unlimited.

"a new step up interface (which includes a widget)"

I think that should be a new setup interface perhaps?

Directories and iCal server make me happy (I wondered what directories was on the seed). I'm not so sure about the wiki's and the blog - the software on tiger was pretty weak, and I noted to the groups testing that the code itself was poor. It'll probably suit a light, small office without web developers or IT help, but it seemed fairly basic and not fully standard at the time. iChat server should be good if it's Jabber 2, so it can compete more with the feature-full http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/index.jsp

I still haven't heard anything about Time Machine on the server - it'd be nice to step away from rsync and some of the other attempts, and if it can go to a mounted remote server, that would be a killer backup feature! Server backup remotely is always a headache (though some of the guys at Mozy said they're 'coming out' with a mac server edition).

Either way, I'm looking for more stability; the current environment is buggy at times, and lots of the open source installations have errors in them (spam assassin comes to mind) that require a re-install. Some of the hooks they have to the open source files cause even more headaches and require being locked so as not to ruin advanced customization... but that, again, might not be what they're targeting.
