Monster 85W MacBook Pro power adapter shrinks
Our blog brothers over at Engadget caught a nice little update to the MacBook Pro 85W MagSafe power adapter. Apparently it's being shrunk down closer to the size of 60W adapter that comes with the MacBook. Considering how huge the older 85W adapter was, this is a welcome change. The Apple Store is listing a shipping time of 3-4 weeks for the new adapter which goes for the same $79 as the old one (and the 60W).

A guy in my office just got a new Dell laptop. The only cool thing about it was the power brick is 1cm thick which makes it perfect for traveling. I think Apple should steal that design. Wider and longer but much thinner.

Do we know if these are available immediately in the physical stores?

Any word on whether those that have recently ordered Macbook Pros will receive the new power adapters? I have an estimated time of 6-13 days before mine arrives, if that helps.

Closer to the 60 W or as small as the 60 W?
If they cost the same, and are the same size, why would anyone buy the 60 W anymore (and I mean MacBook users)? A side by side compare shot would be nice.

I love my new MBP 2.2GHz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't see any point whatsoever in buying a smaller version of the power adaptor. Which only knocks 1" of the height. But hey it's a bonus for future buyers :)
Unless you want two for keeping one at work/home set up ready and one to travel with.

Well, that explains why they were out of 85w power adapters for the MBP when I went into the Pasadena Apple Store this week. I couldn't figure out why they would have been out of such a major component!

Hey
Does anyone know wether the 60W will work with the MBP or vice versa?

Nice! I just got a MBP a few weeks ago, and while I wish I had gotten the new adapter with it, I was planning to eventually buy a second one so I could leave one plugged in at home. It will be great to have a smaller one for my computer bag. Coming from the PB, I couldn't believe how HUGE the MBP's adapter is!

Ahem! It's really NOT that huge. And it certainly isn't ugly. So meh.

I had a hard enough time getting the smaller one to fit in many of the outlets and power strips I come across, either because of how many outlets it takes up, or not fitting in between other nearby obstructions. The big one is even worse. I appreciate the compact way the adapter can plug right into the wall, but it usually requires a bit of work to make room for it.

AFAIK, the 85-watter will work on the MacBook, but the 60-watter will not work on the MacBook Pro.

They should rather come up with a 12V-solution for in-car use or at least license their MagSafe to some supplier who is capable... This dc/ac-converter "solution" is crap all the way. We need notebooks in car all the time and my boss is seriously considering to buy some MBPs for us - but without proper 12V-supply this is not going to happen :/ Unless - hope someone can point out an URL? - i missed something out there on the market........ ?

AFAIK, the 60W will run a MBP but not charge it.

Hopefully they also fixed the problem where the prongs on the magsafe plug don't fully spring back.
That defect resulted in an expensive repair on my lappy....

Bugger, I just picked up a 60W adapter a few weeks ago cos the 85 was too big to fit into my (very slim) MBP case.
For those querying the use of the 60W with the MBP, I can confirm that I have been using it for a few weeks now and not only does it run the MBP with no discernable loss of performance, it also quite happily recharges, although I think it takes a little longer (I haven't measured - I've got work to do).
Actually, my main gripe is not with Apple's design but with the ridiculous size of the UK plug! It's massive (a 13A fuse is built into the plug - OTT 'elf & saftey if you ask me). Any chance Jonathan Ive could design a slimline replacement for the UK govt?

My MBP is charging away happily on a (borrowed) 65W MB power brick right now, and it even seems to charge nearly as quickly as with the 85W.
My 85W may have just up and died on me though, sadly. And I'm not sure I can stand to wait a few weeks for a replacement. *grumble*

I just bought a MBpro 2.4 today and it came with the new power brick. It is so sweet and tiny, compared to the old one. It is just a bit bigger than the brick for my powerbook.
That is why the stores are out of them. They sold out the old and brought in the new. Well worth buying.
